Updated from 2 stars on 7/16/25: After not going to Undertow for a little over a year after a previously disappointing experience when some changes were being implemented, I'm very happy to revise my review to 5 stars. It seems Management took feedback seriously, and while Undertow doesn't have as strong a story element as it used to, the signature atmosphere is back, and drinks are as good as ever. I will continue recommending Undertow as one of the best bars in Phoenix and look forward to my next voyage.

June 2024 review: Very disappointed long-time customer. After my last experience 2 weeks ago, I will not be back anytime soon, if ever again. My boyfriend and I didn't even stay the full 90 minutes during our visit, whereas we always used to stay as long as we possibly could. Undertow took a great thing and absolutely ruined it with their new changes. It's gone from a premier experience to a generic tiki bar. First of all, the atmosphere is completely ruined. From the missing fog machine when you enter to new lighting being far too bright for the signature atmosphere, it feels like a Disneyland experience cheapened out to something akin to Castles and Coasters. The loss of the story in the menus is particularly tragic coupled with illegible maps that are far too big for the porthole tables. Management has gutted everything that gave Undertow it's ambience and signature feel (minus its music and craft cocktails - which in a city with a culinary cornucopia, can easily be found elsewhere). I used to come here every few weeks as a favorite location with friends and for dates as well as collect the great merchandise that supported the Undertow story. Regrettably, this will no longer be the case unless the atmosphere is reverted back to what it used to be. I am truly saddened to have lost what previously was a very...

This place is handsdown the coolest "underground" tiki bar/quasi-speakeasy (I say quasi cuz it is pretty conspicuous once you are in Sip) I have ever been to! An "I am not worthy" bow for the creators of this cocktail bar masterpiece that goes above and beyond the realm of "thematic".

First off, the decoration is just crazy, insane, authentic perfection. You are basically in a pirate-ish circa whenever ships with masts and a "crow's nest" reigned supreme ship...complete with port-holes that have ever-changing scenes with each passing storm!

And, speaking of...the bar has thunderstorms that roll on through every so often complete with light and sound-effects (seen and heard by the jealous bystanders upstairs in Sip!)!?! I mean...what!?!

Throw into that already amazingly experiential mix some incredible (and spectacularly thematic) cocktails (one is actually served in a round vial via treasure chest!?!) and it is seriously...just take my money!

Oddly enough, the cocktails are not extravagantly or even atrociously overpriced...they are pretty on par for what a well-crafted, quality libation goes for these days in the $14-15 range. Though here, you get the ambiance, entertainment, feeling of elite exclusivity, and the bartenders are hot + funny bang for your buck; so honestly, it is such a win-win way to spend any evening.

A friend got me in through another friend my 1st time here, but word on the street is reservations are highly suggested on Fridays and weekends.

I am holding off going back too soon because it was such an awesomely awesome (yes, that word was needed twice to properly express my sense of the awesomeness of this place) that I am still basking in the awe of my first time.
