This is a really great, authentic restaurant. All the dishes were flavorful. Driving Up: The parking lot is gravel with plenty of parking on the side and in the back. Handicap parking is in the back and has a sidewalk for wheelchair access. There is a ramp in the back of the restaurant that leads to the back entryway, too. Service: Nice employees. They were really busy at 12:30 on a Saturday, so expect about 4-5 people ahead of you when you order during prime time. It’s pretty casual, so when you’re done, you place your plates in the dirty dish area by the back entry way. Food: Top notch. We ordered the Mr. and Mrs. Dosa. We ordered it with a vegetable uthapam, which was probably my favorite because it tastes like a soft, semi sweet vegetable pancake lol. We also ordered the karaikudi masala fried rice, a new dish that’s somewhat spicy, a mango lassi, and gobi pakoda which is fried cauliflower. Only con is I really wish the mango lassi was colder. Maybe make the fridge colder or place the drinks in iced containers. Environment: The expansive menu is up on the flat screens. Drinks are canned or bottled, along with fresh smoothies. There’s a water dispenser machine by the restroom. Hand sanitizers are screwed onto the walls, also. The interior has 8 tables. They have an outdoor patio seating area with tents. You must come inside to get your food if you’re sitting outside. If you sit inside, they’ll give you a number for your table and they’ll deliver the food to your table. I like their slogan, “Today’s food never sees tomorrow’s sunrise.” They don’t put additives or preservatives, and everything is freshly made.

I have been coming to SBC for about 18 months now and have been here perhaps a dozen times individually, with friends (both Indian and non-Indian), and family from out-of-town. I have never been disappointed. The food is fresh, tasty, and as authentic as it gets for South Indian fare. There is great variety and some creative takes on classics, like uttapam and dosa. Both indoor and outdoor seating available (both very limited as it’s a small place). Don’t expect restaurant service. This truly is an Indian-style order-eat-and-go dhaba kind of place. Prices have increased considerably in the last two years, but are still reasonable for the quality and quantity of each dish. Echoing what others have written about the crowds: it’s absolutely true. If you come pretty much any time on a weekend, or at peak dinner time, there will be nearly no parking and a loooong line of people ordering. Come early or on a weekday lunch for minimal crowds and expedient service. Because items are made-to-order, they will be brought to your table as they are prepared, so not all guests will be served simultaneously. As the type of food served here typically is best eaten immediately after making (otherwise, it can get soggy), this type of serving really isn’t a bother. If you want to feel like you’ve been instantly transported to India, this is your place. Don’t expect American-style restaurant service. You come here for the incredible food, not for the decor, ambiance or service. Overall, I can’t recommend SBC highly enough. It is my go-to place in South Charlotte for absolutely divine South Indian staples.

Shri Balaji Cafe: A Hidden Gem of South Indian Flavor Shri Balaji Cafe is a quintessential hole-in-the-wall that packs a powerful punch of authentic South Indian flavors. Don't be fooled by its unassuming exterior; this place is a treasure trove for vegetarian food lovers. From the moment you step in, you're transported to the heart of India. The aroma of freshly ground coffee and sizzling dosas fills the air, creating an irresistible ambiance. The menu is a delightful exploration of South Indian cuisine, and every dish we tried was a standout. The dosa was crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, and generously filled with your choice of savory fillings. The idli was perfectly steamed, light and airy, a classic comfort food done right. The Singapore fried rice was a delightful fusion, combining Indian spices with Asian flavors for a unique taste experience. The onion uttapam was thick, flavorful, and served with an assortment of chutneys. For dessert, the mysore pak was a sweet indulgence, with its rich, crumbly texture and addictive taste. And no South Indian meal is complete without filter coffee. Shri Balaji Cafe's version was strong, aromatic, and the perfect ending to our culinary journey. If you're craving authentic South Indian food in a no-frills setting, Shri Balaji Cafe is an absolute must-visit. Be prepared to savor every bite of this culinary gem.

South Indian fare is a rarity in Charlotte and we were eager to try out this place in Pineville. The place is close to the downtown Pineville area that seems to be in the throes of a revival. A sizable front yard with some parking places and a few outdoor tables greeted us. The squat building itself and the interior were rich in color. The yellow and green interior reminds you of the colors of the Indian flag. You order your food and wait at the table. I ordered the Puri with the potato side (typically South Indian), while my husband ordered the Puri with the Chole. The purus were perfect and so were the sides. Each dish was tasty and authentic, I took the extra step of ordering their “filter coffee.” What a disappointment. It tasted like an instant coffee diluted with loads of milk. I couldn’t finish it. Neither did my husband. We were expected to drop off our dirty dishes in bins outside the restaurant. Another unpleasant task that left us disappointed. I believe the food will bring us back to taste their other dishes, but no coffee next time! Based on just the food served, I would it give it a 5 star review.

Sri Balaji Caffe, with its charming indoor and outdoor seating, initially promises a pleasant dining experience. However, the limited and unmarked parking spaces might pose a challenge, especially during busy hours like Saturday evenings. If you plan to visit then, be prepared for a warm atmosphere as the air conditioning struggles to cope with the crowd. The vegetarian menu offers a variety of options, but our experience with the Dosa, Chhole Puri, and Veg Noodles left us wanting more. The Dosa lacked flavor, the Chhole Puri, while tasty, was overly oily, and the Veg Noodles were bland and forgettable. Additionally, the understaffed restaurant resulted in slow service, which is understandable during peak hours but still detracted from the overall experience. While Sri Balaji Caffe has potential with its cozy ambiance and vegetarian focus, there's definite room for improvement in terms of food quality and service efficiency. If you're seeking a quick and casual vegetarian meal, this might be a suitable option, but manage your expectations accordingly.
