After two long years my favorite vegan farmer's market stand now has their own place! Shado Beni has been serving Trindad vegan food practically every week at various farmer's markets and at the annual vegfest throughout the city.

Now Chef Ulric has his own place! Today was the soft opening of the small restaurant. His Lenten special was called "bake and not shark" made from oyster mushrooms along with spicy slaw and seasonings. You can either eat in or take out. I got mine to go and believe me that sandwich was amazing!!

Chef Ulric's specialty staple is called "doubles" which is usually made from chicken peas and adding spicey sauces including a Caribbean season known as "Shado Beni." Normally he would offer that and one other Trindad creation such as "Buss up shut", "paleo" and even corn soup. I've never been disappointed with anything he makes. He also makes desserts and specializes in a drink called Sorrel. Everything he serves is vegan.

For the new restaurant they plan to start regular operating hours next week. They plan at this point to serve brunches. At this point they don't have a phone. Weekly orders can be done on their website and they will chat with you via email.

I'm looking forward to trying out their brunches in the future. Located on Brighton Rd on the North Side limited parking...

I’ve been coming to shadobeni412 since the farmers market no storefront days. I truly appreciate the owners and Ulric is a stand up guy but after today and a few odd interactions with one of the workers there, I don’t think we’ll be back. We’ve spent thousands on Shadobeni and today we stopped in for takeout to eat on their front picnic benches before heading down to a show. We picked up our takeout with 5 min left of Shadobeni being opened and went out front to the picnic tables. During mid meal, one of the workers who was as polite as you CAN be when asking customers who spent 70 dollars to leave the storefront because they didn’t want to clean up trash left behind after open hours ( zero trash left behind, trash can literally across the street but not in front of their shop ) so we were forced to get up and eat our meal on the hood of our car directly across the street from the restaurant. We were done with our meal that we ate on the hood of our car before all of the shop employees were gone themselves. Sad to feel embarrassed like that at a place I thought so highly of and spent TONS of money to support....

The BEST food out of our entire vacation to Pittsburgh!! This place is such a vibe! Beautiful inside with plants, natural light & fun decor! We got the most amazing food here! While visiting Pittsburgh, we learned of this all vegan spot & HAD to try it! We’ve never had Trini food so we were eager to try - and it was amazing!

What we got:

Oyster mushroom wings- super crispy! They were battered to perfection! Dipped in the tamarind sauce just elevated the flavor!

Mac n cheese- Hands down the best vegan Mac n cheese I’ve ever had! It was baked to perfection with a nice crispy top with gooey melted cheese inside. Flavor was on point!

Plantains- Never had baked plantains and they were SO good! Super soft, somewhat sweet with the perfect flavor profile! So yummy!

The vibe here is amazing. The food is super fresh, colorful & full of love. You can tell they put a lot of care into quality, delicious food for you! Wish we lived close because we would come here OFTEN! Come here for some of the best food you will...

I searched Google looking for doubles, the same ones I get in Brooklyn and came across this Gem! I went in today hoping to fulfill my craving for doubles but unfortunately they’re only sold on the weekends. My second choice were oyster wangz but there wasn’t any today. End up ordering the bowl (with coconut rice stewed soya, okra and chickpeas) fried oyster mushroom sandwich, sorrel wine, tamarind ginger drink and a vegan chocolate chip cookie! My total was $41 which I felt was an ok price! I was displeased with the sandwich bc it was overcooked and the small amount of sorrel wine. The taste was not that great for me but it may be for someone else. The tamarind ginger drink, vegan cookie and stewed soya was so delicious!! I will come back to try the doubles or roti! I appreciate the cleanliness of the small restaurant and the presentation of the food!

The owner of this place was so welcoming and the murals on the wall composed by the owner makes you feel like you’re sitting in Trinidad. The food was freshly made to order but did not take long. We sampled bake, tomato choka, baigan and pumpkin and of course some Trini style sorrel. Although we originally used the find doubles near me, and were directed to Shadon Beni, we were informed that he only served it on the weekend. Being a wonderful and supportive Trinidadian he directed us to another Trinidadian spot which opened the day before that would have doubles! I was so surprised because he didn’t have to tell us about it but this owner said “ of course I want him to succeed we need more Trini’s in Pittsburgh!” 🇹🇹🥰🇹🇹
