After two long years my favorite vegan farmer's market stand now has their own place! Shado Beni has been serving Trindad vegan food practically every week at various farmer's markets and at the annual vegfest throughout the city.
Now Chef Ulric has his own place! Today was the soft opening of the small restaurant. His Lenten special was called "bake and not shark" made from oyster mushrooms along with spicy slaw and seasonings. You can either eat in or take out. I got mine to go and believe me that sandwich was amazing!!
Chef Ulric's specialty staple is called "doubles" which is usually made from chicken peas and adding spicey sauces including a Caribbean season known as "Shado Beni." Normally he would offer that and one other Trindad creation such as "Buss up shut", "paleo" and even corn soup. I've never been disappointed with anything he makes. He also makes desserts and specializes in a drink called Sorrel. Everything he serves is vegan.
For the new restaurant they plan to start regular operating hours next week. They plan at this point to serve brunches. At this point they don't have a phone. Weekly orders can be done on their website and they will chat with you via email.
I'm looking forward to trying out their brunches in the future. Located on Brighton Rd on the North Side limited parking...
Read moreI’ve been coming to shadobeni412 since the farmers market no storefront days. I truly appreciate the owners and Ulric is a stand up guy but after today and a few odd interactions with one of the workers there, I don’t think we’ll be back. We’ve spent thousands on Shadobeni and today we stopped in for takeout to eat on their front picnic benches before heading down to a show. We picked up our takeout with 5 min left of Shadobeni being opened and went out front to the picnic tables. During mid meal, one of the workers who was as polite as you CAN be when asking customers who spent 70 dollars to leave the storefront because they didn’t want to clean up trash left behind after open hours ( zero trash left behind, trash can literally across the street but not in front of their shop ) so we were forced to get up and eat our meal on the hood of our car directly across the street from the restaurant. We were done with our meal that we ate on the hood of our car before all of the shop employees were gone themselves. Sad to feel embarrassed like that at a place I thought so highly of and spent TONS of money to support....
