I wish I could give Tokyo Shokudo a perfect rating, because their food is consistently so good. But their Achilles heel has consistently been their service.
We've been to TS about 7 times, since their opening. And while their service is their handicap, the food is what keeps bringing us back, over and over to endure the service.
For all of our visits, there has not been 1 visit were our orders came out without an issue. In the beginning, visits 1 & 2, when they first opened, the service was slow, like out of the ordinary, slow. I get it was possibly attributed to being newly opened, understaffed and super busy. But the food was AMAZING! *Since then, the service has been quicker, but that's also because we've avoided their busy hours as much as possible.
All other visits, including the one yesterday, the wrong orders or forgotten orders have plagued our visits. We've tried ordering differently, by name, and then by number, and then asking the staff to confirm our order, and strangely our orders have come out different. I hope this mystery gets resolved at some point.
To be clear and fair, the staff has always been very polite and wonderful in correcting the mistakes. Definitely do not want to miscommunicate that we've had a miserable experience or anything, but minor inconveniences.
To end on an honest and positive note, the staff is really nice and attentive, the food is amazing, the prices are reasonable, the restaurant is clean, the bathrooms are clean and did I mention the FOOD IS AMAZING! *I did have 1 experience where my food was prepared correctly, and that was ordering take out.
Overall, once the in-dining experience issues are worked out, promptness and accuracy of the food ordered, then this is another dangerous go to place for great Japanese food! *Try ordering their sushi handrolls. You have to specify handrolls if you want handrolls, otherwise they've changed their "sushi" to nigiri sushi...
Read moreThe food here is tasty, and the decor is nice. However, as a customer, I had several experiences that make me hesitant to recommend this place to other customers.
The waiter who greeted and served me seemed unprofessional and unsure of his job. I asked for a table for two adults and two children and he seemed confused by my request, probably because I initially walked in alone. It took him several minutes to seat me, even though I was the only patron waiting to be seated, and there were plenty of tables open.
After being seated, my friend and I were disappointed to see that many of the menu items (ramen and sushi) were still marked as unavailable since we visited on 10/7, 3 weeks after the grand opening on 9/15.
The menu also describes the kid’s plate as including “deep fried jumbo shrimp, chicken karaage, vegetable, rice, french fries, drink, and dessert.” When we asked about the dessert, we were told by the waiter that there is in fact NO dessert…
I ordered a chicken cutlet bowl, and when the waiter brought it out, he wobbled and spilled some miso soup and dropped a slice of my chicken cutlet onto his tray. I said I was okay taking that slice of chicken from his tray, but he told me no and insisted that he would replace my chicken. He never came back to replace my chicken slice and also didn’t explain why until I confronted him about it later. He then explained that he would have to replace the whole chicken cutlet and asked me if I wanted the whole chicken cutlet?
I also found a small hair in the rice in my bowl, which was unpleasant. The kitchen manager did come out to apologize and comped my chicken cutlet bowl, which is why my review is 3-stars instead of lower.
The waiter did not come by promptly to clean up our dishes or give us our check, and my friend ended up having to stop him to ask for the bill.
Overall, this was quite an uncomfortable dining experience, mainly due to our interactions...
Read moreCame here for lunch on their first opening day. Upon entering, took a while to be welcomed. Once acknowledged, we were seated at a waiting table since all 6 booths & 2 tables were full.
Here's our order: Appetizer - free edamame, which were cold & frozen. We let the head wait staff know & since its free, no biggie. Takoyaki - since it was about 70% potato filler, it was hard to tell the tenderness of the octopus bits, but overall, still yummy.
Main - I ordered the chicken cutlet boiled plate. It came with a nice small side salad of mixed greens (none of that iceberg lettuce/carrot combo) with corn (Its corn! Sorry, can't help it after that viral corn song), fresh grape tomatoes & sesame dressing. Even though the miso soup came in a small cup, it was chock full of spinach, tomatoes, tofu & corn. The chicken cutlet was tender, not tough & the side cabbage slaw with sesame dressing was pretty crunchy. Since the egg was soft boiled, it blended in with the gravy, so I didn't taste too much of that. The serving of rice soaked up all the leftover bits nicely.
Hubby ordered the eel egg bowl which he enjoyed thoroughly. The eel was nice & tender & the rice was piping hot. It also came with a side of miso soup.
They currently do not have sushi available. I asked if they served any hot green tea, which they don't & upon asking, won't be adding to the menu. So I ordered the iced matcha, which is pure unsweetened matcha tea & may not be to everyone's liking.
It looked like there was a party room as well.
Service - 3 stars (to be fair, its opening day & they are still hiring) Food - 4 stars
Overall, I would come back to try the...
