I rarely ever write reviews, however this restuarant was so spectacular that I made an exception. This morning, on New Years day, I was looking for a good soul food place around the Pomona area that would knock my socks off and start off my New Years right. Not only were my socks knocked off, but so were my shoes. My family and I were immediately greeted with good hospitality and a comfortable environment. There are beautiful jazz paintings all around the restuarant. Our server was very nice and made sure to always accommodate us. We had the seafood gumbo, big ben’s bacon omellete with waffles and potatoes, slim da monsta, and joe joes combo with mac and cheese and black eyed peas. All The food took about 20 minutes to come and were all very fresh and hot and the portions were plentiful. First off, the seafood gumbo was immensely flavorful and tasted so fresh . The King crab and lobster added an amazing flavor bomb. 10/10 recommend. Next, big bens bacon omellete was a great classic, however the star of the show was really the side potatoes. The potatoes were perfectly seasoned, perfectly textured, and just exquisite. If you were to get one side for breakfast, I would recommend the potatoes. The waffles were also perfectly sweet, fluffy, and delicious and the syrup was hot and delectable. Slim da monsta wings were crispy and seasoned. Joe Joes combo was a dish that truly blew me away. It was the most tender and flavorful gravy oxtail over rice and exceeded my expectations. The black eyed peas on the side were good, but I’d say was a bit more on the salty side. The baked mac and cheese was amazing, classic, flavorful and had a nice texture. Overall I highly recommend coming to this place, for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. I will definitely be coming back....
Read moreI give up. Tried this place 8 years ago when I was prego and everything was bad. So here we are 8 years later giving a second chance and definitely just wasted $50. They make their mac n cheese exactly like my aunt that can’t cook; straight cheese and noodle, with zero flavor. I drowned it in hot sauce, still nasty. Yams hairy! I hate that when eating yams!!!! Oxtails were tough asf! Again lack seasoning so I drowned the rice gravy and oxtails in hot sauce. The pork chops even with that thick fried breading had zero seasoning, you guessed it I drowned it in the little hot sauce I had left. The potato salad is more on the salty side than that little kick of sweet I’m used to from someone who really knows how to make potato salad. Yea idk how they still in business maybe because we lack soul food restaurants out here but I definitely give up on soul food out here. Every place I’ve tried sucks! Especially Georgias in Eastvale; gross!
And for my reply to you giving me sample mac n cheese and yams; it was exactly the same results disgusting!!! What type of unprofessional response was that calling me a hater!!!?? Why would I hate on you sir I don’t know you from a can of paint I just wasn’t letting it slide twice on giving you the review you deserved. I spared your business 8 years ago now I gotta be honest with future customers so they don’t have to waste their money twice like I did. Your food that I’ve tried sucks! Simple. And thanks for showing your true colors. Just by your reply people can go taste it then make their own decision. Have a blessed day and get new recipes or someone who can actually cook and season in the kitchen...
Read moreIt’s hard to find this place, even using a map app. No parking lot, but that’s ok. Just be aware of folks in the street.
Kinda scary looking from the outside; we weren’t sure if it was really open, but it was.
Their waffles were great, as were my over-medium eggs. The service was good, too.
But my hubby’s scrambled egg whites were so unappetizing looking that he didn’t eat them—he said they looked wet. (undercooked? oily? I’m not sure.)
I didn’t like the sausage patties, but he did. They had a weird flavoring to me (My husband is Black, and I’m white. I don’t have much experience with tasting Afro American cooking, though, so maybe that’s why I didn’t care for the seasons—just not used to that style? I’m used to basic (aka white?) diner style sausage patties. I feel so ridiculous explaining that, but here’s a funny side note: years ago, I noticed my hubby likes hot sauce on (in my mind) “practically everything.” 🥲🥲😋😍
The home fries were passable and the grits were fine.
Worst was that for toast, “sourdough” was one of the choices. But the waiter didn’t inform me there are literally SEVERAL CLOVES of garlic mixed within each slice!
I think they mistook us for vampires 🧛 because there were at least EIGHT cloves of garlic 🧄 🧄🧄🧄🧄🧄🧄🧄in one slice of their sourdough bread!
Nice paintings on the wall, but the booth seats were awkward and uncomfortable.
The water tasted chlorinated, as if it were straight out of the tap. I could only take one sip of it. They could at least filter it, right?
I really wanted to love this place so I could support a Black-owned business, but I won’t be going back unless I become aware of...
