A Very Sweet Adventure at Blue Star Donuts on Division St., Portland
I finally made it to one of Portland’s most talked about donut shops after a friend raved about it and let me say, it was a sugar-fueled adventure. I grabbed a dozen to sample the variety, and while many donuts hit the mark, some leaned a bit too far on the sweet side for my taste while others completely missed the mark. . That said, the craftsmanship and creativity are undeniable.
Standouts:
O.G.: Soft, fluffy, and chewy with a beautifully balanced glaze. The brioche dough is next-level, and as a horchata fan, this one spoke directly to my soul.
Apple Fritter: A crunchy outer layer, fluffy center, and a cinnamon-apple flavor that shines. The apple cider glaze made it the best fritter I’ve ever had.
Buttermilk Old-Fashioned: Classic done right. Moist, crumbly, and elevated by their signature O.G. glaze. A must try.
Chocolate Bergamot Old-Fashioned: Perfectly balanced chocolate, neither too sweet nor too bitter. Easily one of the best chocolate donuts I’ve tasted.
Lemon Poppy Old-Fashioned: Bright, tangy lemon flavor in a soft, moist cake. A citrus lover’s dream.
Sugar & Spice: Simple, nostalgic, and absolutely perfect. Soft and doughy with just the right touch of sweetness, cinnamon, spice and everything nice.
The Misses:
Cointreau Crème Brûlée: Sadly, a major letdown. The donut was dry and lacked the usual brioche flavor. The sticky top and almost nonexistent crème filling left me depressingly disappointed.
Maple Glaze: While the texture was spot-on, the flavor leaned more citrusy than maple to my palate. It was a bit confusing and not one I’d reorder.
Blueberry Cake Crumble: Great base donut, but the almond crumble didn’t quite work for me. It had a peanut-y taste that clashed with the overall blueberry taste. After scraping off the crumble I did enjoy it a lot more.
Final Thoughts: If you're a fan of very sweet donuts with bold flavors and thoughtful textures, Blue Star is definitely worth the stop. While a few flavors missed the mark for me, several were absolutely stellar. It's a place where classic and inventive flavors collide, and I'm glad I finally got to experience...
Read moreBlue Star gets 5 stars from me! I used to always talk up Voodoo Donuts, but it is now dead to me. Good bye to dealing with Cash Only policies, I’m going to Blue Star for all my sugar fixes from now on! I had the basil blueberry bourbon, chocolate ganache, crème brulee, lemon poppyseed old fashioned, and the passionfruit donuts. I didn’t care much for the chocolate ganache because I don’t really like almonds or other nuts on my donuts, but my sister wanted chocolate and the guy before me get the last Valrhona chocolate, that jerk! All the other donuts were popping with flavor, and the texture was so soft and fluffy--- absolutely to die for. The passionfruit had a tangy kick to it, and the poppyseed old fashioned was WAY better than I thought it would be--- definitely the best old fashioned cake donut than anywhere else that I’ve ever had. It’s a tough call between the old fashioned and the crème brulee for my favorite donut--- the crème brulee came with a little stick of liquid sugar or something, and was crispy on top, and filled with crème in the middle- and I especially love when you can see the vanilla beans cooked in desserts. Fast service, and I love the open kitchen design. Definitely hitting up this place next time I’m back and recommending this to everybody...
Read moreSo this is a place that you have to bring the In-Laws and family members to when they come and visit Portland . The Donuts or rather, the "Cakes donuts" are very, very good and will cost you a pretty penny or some dollars.
An apple fritter will cost you $400 , however, it is worth the money , it is that good. The ambiance is stark, with small tables and stools to sit on. While there you should expect to be in a crowd , because I guess this is the new thing to do, which is go to Blue Star Doughnut and take pictures of the donuts in the window.
The coffee is very good and very hot,, serve yourself . The guys behind the counter are your typical millennial and they just sale the donuts, dont ask any real question about the doughnuts unless you want to hear a an unintelligible conversation .
Should you go to Blue Star ..Yes . its a Portland thing , but be aware fo the parking at this location.. it is tight. As far a doughnut, if you want a variety of doughnuts that are good to great and do not cost as much as a Grand Slam at IHop then go to Voodoo and...
