Fat Albert's Waffle Bar — Restaurant in Portland

I had heard great things about Fat Albert's historically but when they reopened, unfortunately the experience was disappointing.

The menu has changed completely, and not in a good way. A few overpriced and underwhelming waffle options. While there, every single customer that entered asked if they could add a side of bacon and all were told no, one couple actually just left. The prices have gone up significantly, which doesn’t match the quality of what’s being served.

For the price, I expected much much better. Sadly, I won’t be coming back. I think the waffle and mimosa idea is a great one, just needs to be executed better. Service was very good and so was the atmosphere. I will also call out after leaving, I pulled up reviews because I was wondering if others had the same experience as I did and to my disappointment, the owner responds to all of the negative reviews with a snarky and almost defensive attitude towards the customers who are sharing feedback. I've been a loyal customer of this spot for years. It used to be my go-to breakfast place. I was thrilled when they reopened, but unfortunately, the experience fell extremely short of what it once was.

The menu has been completely revamped, and not in a good way. All of my favorite orders were really replaced with, average, and extremely overpriced waffles. The prices have increased substantially, which makes the whole experience feel disproportionate.

Service was slow, even though the restaurant was nearly empty. The staff were friendly, which I appreciated, but it didn't make up for the lackluster food and the long wait times.

Ultimately, the meal was just okay, but for the price, I expected much more. It's hard to reconcile how much I used to love this place with how disappointing it has become. Sadly, I won't be returning; I'd rather hold on to the fond memories than have them overshadowed by a...

Has a BIG sign which says CASH OR CHECKS ONLY, right up front on the counter at the front door, so there is no excuse for anyone to complain about this. Been coming here for over ten years and the sign has always been there.

This sign is the ONLY thing which might be considered to be "unfriendly," as the people who work here are great. Funny, friendly, nice and helpful, which only makes the outrageously delicious food even better.

You can meet some amazing people here if you sit at the counter, which has a truly American feeling of "family." Just sit down, decide which of the great dishes you want, sit back and chat with the customers while Vicky, Linda, Judy, Yaddi, Hector, Jorge and Manuel take care of you.
