I'm assuming 50 Licks is trying to be direct competition to Salt and Straw with their more creative flavor combos - I like this a lot because I hate the long lines at Salt & Straw. There was no line for 50 Licks.
Lack of Indoor Seating: I've read several reviews to try their Mango Sticky Rice ice cream, so I thought I'd give them a try while I was in the neighborhood on a cold and quite rainy Saturday. I was a bit surprised they still don't allow indoor seating, which I would've been more upset about had it not been for a large tented area right next to Crema coffee nearby as it was pouring rain out. If they're not going to have indoor seating, I would've liked signage pointing to this tent area.
Wasteful bowl and spoon: Anywho I asked for my ice cream in a cone I thought to reduce the waste, and oddly I was served the cone upside down in a bowl with a spoon still. Since this was my first time visiting, I didn't know this was their usual way of presenting & next time I'll ask for the cone without the bowl & spoon.
Coconut Flavor dominates in Mango Sticky Rice: Now for the flavor - the ice cream, at least the batch I tried, I thought had a "flavor washout" happening with the added coconut to the mango rice. I like coconut, but the strong coconut flavor completely overpowered the more gentle flavors of mango and rice. So I tasted predominantly coconut. My suggestion is to leave the coconut out & let the mango and rice shine alone.... or significantly up the mango and rice flavor amounts.
Waffle Cone Stands Out: The winner of the experience I thought was the waffle cone - it's clearly house made & tasted like it had sugar baked into it... similar to a Belgian style waffle. This stood out to me as unique and quite tasty. Although I'd like the ice cream to shine just as much as the cone.
So would I be back? Yes, I'd certainly be willing to try them again. Hopefully my next flavor will shine as much or more than the...
Read moreI don’t recall the exact name of the flavour that I tried recently, but it was something along the lines of picante lime 🥭mango which reminded me of the candy “Lucas” only in an ice cream flavour which I have to admit was pretty darn delicious. The second scoop that I had, yup, go big or go home right?! was the lavender salted caramel, I will say that this one did not impress me as much as the spicy mango. I couldn’t help but to compare it to the frenemy Salt n straw “equivalent”. Anything salted caramel I think it’s safe to say that S&S wins. I had to deduct an extra star purely based on the quality of their homemade waffle cones. A little too soft and thin for my taste, I only had a few licks on my ice cream before it started breaking apart. Hopefully they can perfect this by maybe adding a little more batter and letting it “cook” a little longer? I dunno just throwing ideas. I understand this place is considered to make artisan ice cream but for the price point, I think I’d rather hit the good ol...
Read moreNot sure what the hype is here...I tasted 4 or 5 different flavors and all were very "meh". Nothing really stood out flavor-wise...sorta had the aftertaste of what the name implied they would taste like, but the blandness of the base was overwhelming. So, I figured if I wanted something with a more predominant flavor profile, a sure bet would have to be the Butterscotch Whiskey... After all it is marked on the menu it's for those 21 and over... So it must taste like whiskey if it's got that much whiskey in it, right??? Wrong! I could not discern any flavors of whiskey nor butterscotch for that matter all I could taste was that bland base. The only reason I'm giving it to stars is because it was very clean inside and the girls working there were very nice. The next time I feel the need for a $5 scoop of some weird-flavored ice cream, I'm heading over to Division St to get the...
