Kati is perhaps my favorite restaurant in Portland! My top two suggestions are the pad see ew and pad mhee kha na. In my opinion, you can't go wrong with either of them.
I always get fried tofu as my protein. It holds itself together better than the soft tofu, and has a bit more flavor. I personally don't like tempeh and their veggie option isn't my thing, though it may be yours if you like carrots more than I do.
(More in-depth review:) I haven't gone to Kati in a long while -- I moved and now it's an hour's walk away. :( So this review may be dated by about a year. But I've been going since they opened at the start of 2017, and their quality has remained consistent.
My favorite dish, hands down, is the pad mhee kha na. It's my comfort food. It has these delicious shiitake chunks which are to die for, and I always love Chinese broccoli. The veggies are similar to their pad see ew, but the two dishes taste very different. I'd describe the pad mhee kha na as having more of an umani taste, I think.
Their pad see ew is outstanding. I suggest it to most people I take to Kati, and ALL of them have liked it (though to be fair, some of them with less rabidness than I). The Chinese broccoli really makes the dish, and of course there's the shiitake chunks I was talking about. It's hard for me to go back to pad see ew with normal broccoli, now that I live further away! It's not quite as sweet as some other Thai places -- which is a positive in my book, because I find some other pad see ews are a bit cloying.
The sukho thai noodles are delicious, and were the third of my three mainstays, though I've never been able to describe it very well. I have to be in the mood for it, but when I'm in that mood, dang, it hits the spot! If you leave some of your meal to eat later, you will find yourself with some very heavy noodles in place of your soup, which never bothered me much, but it's better in soup form. (I imagine the same thing might happen with takeout or delivery, but I haven't tried.)
If you can handle spicy, the pla rad prik is simply amazing. It was too spicy for me, but it was still delicious through the tears. I wish I could eat it! I will say, for the price you might find it too small of a serving.
Their fried rice tastes and looks like it's made with fresh vegetables, not the peas-corn-carrot frozen veggie mix that a lot of Thai places seem to use, which I really appreciate. I don't order fried rice very often, so I can't give much of an opinion on it beyond that.
Their tom kha is delicious, but I'm used to delicious tom kha, so I don't know if that's unusual. I've ordered it on several occasions and not been disappointed.
I personally would steer away from the pad thai. I'm not a fan of it anywhere, but I especially didn't like it at Kati. If I remember correctly, I found it too sour? If you're wanting something comfortable, I'd just go with the pad see ew. (Is my...
Read moreI wish I could give Kati more than 5 stars. As a long time customer (I think we came the first week they opened?!), never have I had a bad meal, a bad experience, or an unpleasant conversation with any of the staff. I've never met a restaurant owner that cares more about her staff and her product than Nan. Growing up on a highly southeast Asian diet left me craving Thai food and feeling like there was a little Thai food hole in my heart when I moved to Portland. Kati hits the spot in every single way.
From flavours of sweet to smokey, umami, salty and even bitter, there's something for everyone. 'Boss' the main chef has such consistent cooking and produces some really wonderful special dishes alongside the other amazing kitchen staff. These people feel like family to us after all this time, and treat us so well whenever we visit, really showing us that small business is the lifeblood of Portland. We've been visiting this place every week+ for over 3 years and have brought overseas visitors, family, friends, clients and everyone we love to eat with us at Kati. No one has ever left disappointed.
If you want an authentic, warm, nourishing vegan thai dish, don't think twice, visit Kati. And if you want to try some of my favorite dishes from over the years, between my husband and I on a regular day, this is our order: 1x Vegan Thai Iced Tea (best I've ever had ever) 1x Vegan Pad Thai + Fried Tofu + No Spice 1x Pad See Ew + Fried Tofu + Medium (Medium is generously spicy you've been warned!) 1x Nam Kao Tod (essential like Thai...
Read moreWe were looking for a good vegan thai place and came to this place after looking at the other reviews.
Service: The highlight of our poor experience was the terrible service. They took a very long time to take our order (they took orders of many people who came after us).The Tom kha soup contains mushrooms and one person in our party doesn’t eat mushrooms. The waiter mentioned that they don’t replace mushroom with other veggies, they can only add tomatoes. Any other “veggie”(btw that only contains broccoli and carrot) costs 3 dollars. The waiter lost her patience when we asked her what veggies are there in the veggie topping and that she cannot explain it again. She was incredibly curt and rude. We asked for a different person to take our order and the second person kept ignoring us for the most part. It was hard to request additional napkins or spoons for that matter.
The servers are impatient and want you to just mindlessly order and shell out your money for ridiculously priced add-ons.
Food:
We ordered: Pad Thai (taste was ok) Red Curry Tom Yum Curly fries
The food was average at best. They have sriracha sauce and chilli oil which tastes burnt. They don’t offer crushed red thai pepper paste.
Atmosphere: Our table was cramped and we barely had any place to move the items around. They had a bar onsite.
Overall, I had a terrible experience and wont be...
