There are a lot of reasons to avoid going to Flying Cat. There’s no ventilation inside, so it constantly smells like smoke. The coffee is terrible, especially in context of the many other places to get good coffee nearby. Even worse is the slow and biased service.
For example, one time I came to pick up an order for my partner which was made over Doordash after waiting for a coffee and food for 20 minutes, realizing he had not started the order with literally no one in the shop. My partner had to come back, 20 minutes later, in which the owner apologized thinking I was a Doordash driver and he would have served it more promptly had he known I was picking up for myself. Another time I placed an order online in which he also had not touched the order for 30 minutes because it came in online, in which I asked to cancel when I walked over, and he instead decided to start making the order on time. I get why one might hate the online delivery companies, but at least provide better incentive that leads to a positive experience, or don’t accept orders online, period. And despite all of that, it’s always slow even if you call on the phone, unless you want to order in person and stick it out in this awful smoke filled space.
Sadly, the food is actually pretty good, along with the smoothies. But there are plenty of other places on Division and elsewhere for food, and better smoothies on Hawthorne and Division. If you find you’re starving, go for it, but I highly suggest looking elsewhere. I’ve given this place many, many shots, and wish something better would take...
Read moreOkay so the breakfast sandwich was lovely and the Decaf PB Mocha was to-die-for, but this place was BEYOND DIRTY. I didn’t notice initially because I had my toddler in toe. It wasn’t until I had ordered and sat down to wait for my order that i noticed all the dust and dirt. The floors and tables had not been cleaned in who knows how long. I cleaned the coffee table off where I was planning to eat with sanitize wipes because of Covid, I’m pregnant and my 2 year old was with me touching everything. The table was DIRTY. I didn’t realize until I ate my sandwich that there were 2 MAGGOTS crawling right where I had cleaned with my wipes. They were sitting under my wipes so I must have wiped them there. YUCK! Okay as I said I’m pregnant...so I was pretty disgusted and wanted to puke when I saw that. I know maggots are unlikely to harm you, but what else must be hanging out in this place? The chairs, carpets and floors were gross. I realized with Covid this is not the type of place to go to especially with a toddler. We had no where else to wait out of the cold for my husband at his Zoom visit so we stayed. I was shocked at the uncleanliness! That said, I should have been brave enough to tell the owner about the dirt and maggots, but he seemed like the type who would act surprised and then do nothing about it...and I was embarrassed that I even ate my food there after noticing the...
Read moreWhen I came to Portland two months ago, I was crashing with a friend in the Mt Scott area. I quickly fell in love with Henry Higgins bagels. My friend is in the process of revamping a house near Flying Cat Coffee Co. I was initially sad because I thought I'd be too far from Henry Higgins. Today was my first morning I needed coffee at the new place.
According to photos on here, Flying Cat Coffee Co uses bagels from Henry Higgins!! I waltzed over to check them out. I loved the entire vibe of Flying Cat Coffee Co! The inside feels like a relaxed lounge and the outside seating area feels like hanging out on your own porch!
I ordered the Persian bagel, French Toast latte, cinnamon roll, and Suphalak smoothie. When they totalled it up, I thought they missed something because it was so affordable! Everything was so perfect I don't think I could pick my fav out of the four items. Also want to add that they didn't skimp on the avocado for the bagel. Yum! 🤤
The staff that took me order was chill and not pushy too. Definitely will be back! 💯
Update: Had their scones and muffins since last review. Both are great! Better than...
