After Atsuko Fujimoto won a James Beard award for outstanding baker, I put this at the top my list for places to visit while we were in town for vacation. We arrived around 10am on Saturday morning and easily found street parking. After getting in line, I popped in next door at Rwanda Bean and got a couple of coffees for myself and my husband while we waited. The line moved quickly and once you get towards the front you can see a list of the days offerings. Once inside there is a case with a sample of each item so you can see what they look like which was incredibly helpful. Nothing appeared to be sold out and there were loads of both sweet and savory options. We ordered the cinnamon roll, blueberry buckle cake, anzac vegan cookie, quiche, kouign amann, jalapeno sausage roll and a bag of the granola. Nothing that we purchased wasn't great. This bakery is absolutely worth the hype. A few notes, the bakery is take away only and there is nowhere to sit down inside and the line is all outdoors so if there is inclement weather do come prepared.

I heard about this place's popularity and JB award, and went out of my way to visit them first thing on a Saturday morning while passing through town. It's a takeaway only place, and there was a short line out the door that morning. They had a super unique variety of pastries, both sweet and savory, and not the flavor combos you see every day. I'd try everything on the menu that day if I could. I went with the anzac cookie (vegan), the quiche, and the visitandine (brown butter, cornmeal, chocolate chip cookie). The quiche was decent -- crust was a little dry and could have been richer. The vegan cookie was my favorite -- it had good textures and subtle (Fall) spices. The other cookie was good, too -- nice and gooey, but the flavors didn't come through as much as expected. Overall, nothing blew me away, but this is a pretty good place that I'd visit again.

I really really wanted to like Norimoto, but it was unfortunately just extremely disappointing. We arrived at 7:40 on a Saturday morning and were first in line, but several other parties had lined up by the time it opened at 8. The smells coming out of the bakery were divine and we were really looking forward to warm pastries out of the oven, but unfortunately everything was cold. The kouign amann was fine flavor-wise but really not that flaky. The other pastries were fine but really nothing special. The shokaccia was interesting in concept and extremely briny from the kombu puree, but ultimately not something I would go back for. Overall, Portland has very strong bakery options and Norimoto is fine, but definitely not worth lining up for early in the morning. The workers were extremely friendly though and super sweet.

Regrettably I have to rate this business poorly and perhaps the owners will read and improve. The first thing is the outside decor…no sign ,nothing in the windows and the outside painted black. It does not welcome you. But all this could be forgiven if the bakery items were good. First their so called croissant…keep in mind I’ve been to France and lived in NYC … it’s terrible. The chocolate croissant was a white roll filled with a little chocolate. A croissant should be flakey, buttery and than filled. You can look this up on the internet or go to Dunkin Donuts for a better representation of a croissant. The cookie I bought looked OK but was tasteless. You may be asking why did I buy;I sent my teenage daughter in as I remained in my parked car. I thought being advertised as a French bakery it would be no problem. I wish the bakery no harm but the croissant was so far from a true croissant I just had to write. I hope they improve as it’s very convenient to me. I will know when I see the outside facade improve and than will try again. If it comes as close to a chocolate croissant as I get from Dunkin Donuts I will take my review down and publish a...
