There are only two things I would go back for, the catfish and the hushpuppies. Everything else I had was meh to outright bad and I really can't believe the positive reviews. One thing above all, it is absolutely, in no way whatsoever, genuine BBQ. The smoke is too strong, the sauce is meh, and and the meat is all dry. Ribs were hard and chewy, the brisket wasn't even brisket, it was pulled beef drenched in sauce (no genuine smokehouse should give you meat drenched in sauce, ever - at least not without asking - they give you meat that is good on its own and you pick your sauce), yet also still chewy with lots of burnt bits. The mac and cheese and beans were tiny portions and embarrassingly bad, like throw-away horrible - kraft is better mac and the beans were so overcooked they were basically refried with a little sauce thrown in. And they charge $1.75 extra for either of those instead of fries because they are "originals" - WHAT?! Sweet potato pie - I don't know what that weird tangy sugary s* was, but I doubt it had actual sweet potato in it. Pecan pie is supposed to be that sweet, not sweet potato pie. Anyone who says this place is legit hasn't ever eaten at the other newer BBQ places in town, much less had the real thing in the south (anyone who says this is as good as the south is a shill, it's not even in the same ballpark). I think the main draw of this place must be the cheap lunch deal and the snoop connection, but never, ever plan a family get-together around this place's take out, there are far better options all around Portland, both in quality, and in price for...
Read moreAvoid this place at all costs!!!! If I could give 0 stars I would. I have never written a restaurant review before but I felt compelled to warn people about this place. The service was absolutely horrible. There were 2 people in front of me in line when I walked in and another 2 people who had recently placed their orders. It took 20 minutes...yes 20 minutes before the girl at the counter to took my order. 2 orders orders in 20 minutes...ABSURD! After I ordered it took 30 minutes to get my food and I did not order a complex meal. 50 minutes to get served is ridiculous and I was steaming mad by the time I got it but I thought...perhaps it was worth it? I was wrong! I ordered the special which was meatloaf and mashed potatoes plus cornbread and coleslaw. All of these things are pre-made so I'm not sure why it took so long? The food was awful!!! The cornbread was dry and hard, the coleslaw was raw cabbage with a yellow corn syrup dressing on the side (Definitely not coleslaw and not good). The mashed potatoes were extremely bland and the meatloaf was equally bland. I'm from the south and I have eaten a lot of BBQ and southern food. I've had some bad meals before but nothing compares to how terrible this was. I cannot say this loud enough...THIS PLACE IS TERRIBLE AND SHOULD BE AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GO ANYWHERE...
Read moreI didnt have a great experience with this place. I ordered over the phone for a pick up order, and was told it would be 15 minutes or so. When I got there about 12 minutes later, I found that they hadn't even put my order in! I opted to still patronize the place and it took another 35 minutes to get my food. I got the pork ribs with cornbread. To their credit, the cornbread was a bit dry but decent in flavor, and the ribs were edible and cooked decently, though they were not fantastic. The sauce they were swimming in wasn't particularly flavorful either
This place just struck me as being badly managed. There were 2 people on staff, one person working the register and the other doing everything else. They were barely treading water with the 15 or so customers they were juggling. The place isn't really built in a way that allows for easy service, which is part of the problem- the cook/waiter would have to squeeze past people in line to bring any plates out to the people dining in.
Maybe this was a fluke and its normally better, but I experienced a disorganized mess when I came to Reo's and I cant really...
