Wherein I try to answer why bigger is not better in this case.
Now we could eat sushi twice a day every day and be a very happy couple. So it was with great interest that my girlfriend and I tried two different sushiritos from this establishment.
I was wondering to myself, why can’t you get sushiritos in traditional sushi places? Surely over thousands of years Japanese people have experimented with gigantic sized sushi rolls before, I thought. The answer dear friends, is because this is one of those times when bigger is not better.
The fish was fresh, but the cuts were on the gristly side. So taking a bite meant you would often get a huge piece of fish in your mouth that you couldn’t just bite clean through - so a big piece of fish comes away out of the burrito and flops around outside your mouth. It’s…. inelegant. Not a pretty look. And not real good for sharing.
We both felt each of our ‘ritos lacked flavor. They had that mid-range sushi roll taste. Not bad, just lacking in complexity.
I can’t help but think it’s because the large roll by it’s very nature has big pieces of fish on one side, veggies on the other, maybe crab in the middle - but it’s so wide you can only get a bite of one of the flavors, which to me loses the entire point, which is to have a delightful melange of flavors in each bite. Maybe cutting the fish into much smaller sizes would help? As I am not a sushi engineer, these are mysteries beyond my understanding.
All I know is that both of us would WAY rather drop the same cash on two proper sushi rolls.
So, an A for effort but a huge swing and a miss on taste. Minor deduction for gristle. A little pricey given the quantity...
Read moreI ordered Rollin Fresh for pick up through their website "online ordering" link. We had 4 people ordering- one diabetic, one vegan and two hungry teens. So we tried four regular sushirittos, a poke' dish (you get all the roll insides on a salad or a bed of rice- or you can pick half and half,) and a vegan sushiritto. We learned that this place isn't like the regular sushi place where you might need to order a couple more rolls than people. You only need one dish per person, there is plenty of food per item for one meal. But the thing that got me was how inexpensive it was for the amount of sushi we got! The dishes we ordered ranged from $8-12 each, which is cheap for a sushi roll. Can you imagine going to a sit down sushi place and getting out of there for $10 a person? Well- if you can then you definitely don't have teen boys in your house! You can imagine why I ordered 6 dishes for the 4 of us, but I didn't need to do that, each dish was enough on it's own (although it was still fun to try different items!) So yes- five stars. I am sure we will order again- we all love sushi and this was an easy, delicious fix. Thank you Rollin' Fresh in NW for our...
Read moreI’ve been ordering food from Rollin Fresh since I moved to this part of Portland in 2021. The quality of their fish ingredients has improved significantly in the last year or two. Since then, I’ve really enjoyed my take out items (I usually get the ‘It’s always sunny’ roll or bowl and a spam musubi…yes, spam and it’s delicious in very small quantities). Tonight I ordered through their app the same things I usually get except for extra hamachi with my always sunny bowl. I picked up my food and noticed that there wasn’t the extra hamachi that I paid for, so I hesitantly went back and asked whether or not if I had extra in my bowl or not. I really hate complaining about food, but the gentleman who was working in the truck was apologetic and gave me more. I guess they were low on some things due to supplier issues. Anyway, problem solved on my end and my bowl with half salad and half rice was great! The musubi was amazing as always. I’ll continue to go there for sushi cravings and good...
