My fiancé and I used to live down the street from this brewery and frequented the taproom for several years. It was our absolute favorite spot in Montavilla - excellent brews and vibes, and the very best staff. After moving north last year, we thought it would be fun to have our engagement party here last weekend, and it was EXCELLENT! The owner Sara went above and beyond to help me get details sorted and the price was incredibly fair and competitive. Sara stayed in communication with me through the day of the party, and we were able to rent out the space for three hours with about 30-40 of our close friends and family. Our server Taylor was so quick and efficient, and very kind to our guests. I somehow forgot plates and forks for the appetizers that we brought in, and he had it taken care of in seconds. Everyone ate their share of delicious zapiekankas and drank their share of quality beers (Good Dog Guava will forever be one of our most favorite beers in the world!!). Everything went off smoothly and our engagement party was everything we hoped it would be. Thank you Sara and Taylor for being a part of such a fun day ❤️ I cannot recommend Threshold enough. Our loved ones have heard us rave about this place for years and I’m so glad we finally got to share...

I’ll try to stick to just facts here:

  1. If you order a beer for outside they pour 12oz; if you drink inside you get a full pint—same price either way. The server poured me about 11oz in a 12oz cup with no head. The bartender’s excuse was “these are the only plastic cups we have…”. So if you intend to drink outside be prepared to pay full price for ~30% less beer. Pathetic.
  2. Only 1 person working the counter despite it being a block party/event night. It wasn’t even that busy but there was still a noticeable wait.
  3. The server had NO clue what a West Coast IPA was (probably because they don’t make any that aren’t either hazy, juicy, or imperial). At least she wasn’t able to suggest an IPA alternative to the hazy/juicy choices on the tap list. Call me old school…
  4. It was moist and damp inside, like a locker room. Air conditioning clearly needs help. I don’t care if you’re brewing beer in there or not. Do better. It felt gross on a warm day. This should probably be point #1. It was noticeable immediately. Lastly) The sad graffiti on the street patio boards hadn’t been painted over nearly a year later (based on the poet graffiti artist inscription)....

I’ve been impressed with Threshold since my first visit over 3 years ago, and it continues to be one of my favorite breweries in Portland! I used to refer them as a hidden gem, but having watched them grow for several years, it has become clear the secret is out! They have a wide beer selection full of creativity, and it is clear everything is brewed with a passion for the craft. And while there are plenty of great beers in Portland, the sense of community is really what sets Threshold apart from the rest. A super friendly staff that has always gone above and beyond, and has attracted a real great group of patrons to raise a glass with! I look forward to many more tasty brews, and continuing to watch them excel…and my pup looks forward to more treats (which she now expects the second she enters the building). Cheers to the team,...

Our beautiful Portland weather window is closing fast, so we took a motorcycle ride down to the Montavilla neighbourhood... and found Threshold Brewing & Blending. Perfect spot for us, we wanted a good beer and a light snack. Enter the Zapiekanka, which is a toasted baguette with mushrooms and Polish cheese. Hubby had the kielbasa version, and I had the Classic. And my lucky day, the Classic came spooky - see photo - just in time for Hallowe'en! The beer is amazing, I had the Perun, a Polish dark lager, and hubby had the Neptune, a Baltic porter. I could easily have scarfed down another zapiekanka, they are so good, but if I have another of those we'll need another beer, and we're on a motorcycle, sooo.... Next time we'll drive our car and pace ourselves!

Threshold has a light industrial feel to it that I find just right. Something else that was just right on our most recent visit was a suggestion by the bartender to try two variations as part of a taster. One was the "Jens Bailed Grisette farmhouse ale" and the other was the "Jens In The Woods 'Whiskey' barrel aged" version of the same beer. I've always been skeptical of oddball aging processes, but this was a fascinating and delicious change. The third thing that worked perfectly on our last visit was food provided by Kichana. We had a quesadilla with purple cabbage that I would happily return to experience as a main reason to visit.
