Island Bar & Grille — Restaurant in Portsmouth

I have enjoyed a meal here several times over the years, and it's one of the local spots I will often take friends who are new to the area or haven't experienced the hidden gems of "Ptown". Of course the name throws most everyone off, and we have a good giggle.

This spot is more of a dive bar that looks run down, and its obviously maintained on a budget, but the food is great while the prices are superb. You get HUGE portions that could easily feed two people, and pay next to nothing. Every person I've taken here to eat has gone in with the look on their face of "where in the heck did you just bring me to??", and leave very happy, often with the portion of their food they couldn't execute in one sitting. They have just about anything for any palette, and they're very nice, although the wait staff is often sparce and stretched thin. Walked in with my wife on 29OCT2020 at 1900, and the place was busy with about 20-25 people. Nobody wearing a mask. Walked through a bunch of people having a good time, wearing no masks, and found a table not too far from the bar. The woman behind the bar asked if I had a mask and I replied I had one in my pocket. She mumbled something and I asked her why I was being questioned because nobody else, including herself, was wearing a mask. She mumbled under her breath that me and my wife could leave. Not only was she not wearing a mask but not a single other patron was either. I feel like me and my wife were singled out in account of our race because we did nothing wrong and was minding our business until the very unprofessional female bartender made the remarks. I have frequented this bar for the past five years and have generally enjoyed my experiences during the daytime. However, the evening service has been disappointing due to the conduct of two bartenders. Jo-Jo has displayed discriminatory behavior, which has led to customers being unfairly banned from the establishment. Nica, another bartender, appears to be under the influence of THC, frequently forgets orders, and responds with hostility when customers make requests. While this bar has great potential, the current evening staff detracts from the quality of service. Many locals in the Portsmouth community have started to patronize other bars where they can receive better service and enjoy their time.
