Yikes! Very strong smelling and tasting Tuna sub. Discarded after 1 regrettable bite. I eat a lot of tuna, right out of the can or pouch, and make a lot of tuna salad. This was really gross, unfortunately.
I gave them points for the look of the bread and tidyness of the sandwich prep overall, but cannot go any higher.
Update: I’ve since been to one of these in Los Angeles and it was fantastic. I also returned to the Portsmouth location and had a better experience. However, the LA operation was (believe it or not!) very fast and kept very clean work stations. Portsmouth is sloppy with “debris” everywhere. Something they can improve.
I’ve also learned that JM has been around a long time. We’re just seeing that expansion more up here. I still stand by that many many of these will close around here and smaller population areas.
Editorializing: I feel like JM is going to be the next Quiznos. Flash in the pan, undone by too fast of an expansion and once the “novelty” wears off it will just be another selection we really don’t need. There’s simply nothing remarkable. Maybe in places where food is just overall not well done it will work. But long term in the Northeast? Not in my opinion. Too many great small business options in the long run. This isn’t great. It’s just mediocre- and the tuna is...
Read moreOk hear me out. We don't get a lot of sub shops in suburban NH besides Subway. And as anyone who has ever had a real sandwich can attest, Subway is straight junk. So my expectations were not high when we went to Mike's for a quick takeaway while out and about.
First off, so much staff! In 2022 to see a fully staffed place with everyone operating with such efficiency was a great site. I hope that means Mike's is paying and treating its employees well and so that's a good reason to support them.
Secondly, the meats and cheese are sliced there, the bread is delicious, and 'mikes way' topping choices are a perfect complement. For what it is, a chain sandwich shop, I'm not sure it could be better. So for that, it's 5 stars. It's the best example of its archetype that I've ever visited.
Edit: Now that Jersey Mike's has been bought by Blackstone, it's over for them. I expect this review to consistently drop in star ratings as Blackstone sucks all the equity out of the business to then sell it's desiccated husk as a...
Read moreWe were there a couple of months ago, and so excited to try the new Portsmouth location…and boy do we regret it. The sandwiches were okay, but the service was trash. I have never ordered food from an environment where the staff were rude, and almost angry/inconvenienced that you are ordering from them. The blonde girl working there was incredibly rude, you could tell she hates her job. I’m sorry but you shouldn’t work in food service, if you hate customers. Then there was “Matt” I believe his name was… who couldn’t have been “nicer” to our face. However, my husband had to return a few minutes later because they made his sandwich incorrectly, and he witnessed Matt talking down, and was borderline verbally abusive towards his employees. No employer should ever treat an employee like that, especially during business hours. Needless to say we won’t be returning. We’ll continue to go to Moe’s, where we’re greeted with smiles...
