This location of Newport Creamery leaves much to be desired.
I went on a Monday with as a party of three, around midday. Perhaps for the day of the week or time of day it was busier than usual, or maybe they were understaffed. Despite these factors, none of the staff seemed to have any urgency regarding greeting customers to ensure they were being taken care of. Some parties went without being tended to for far too long.
Excusing this and attributing it to the above reasons is fine. Our server got to us prior to this rush and seated us, and her service was okay. Her section seemed over-extended as she was tending to folks in the bar-area as well as our table outside of it. The delay between ordering food and when it arrived was pretty absurd, though. It'd be easier to excuse this if the staff seemed to have the motivation to work harder/faster/more efficiently to ensure people were being served accordingly, but they weren't. The manager was seen aimlessly wandering in the kitchen rather than assisting with food prep/plating/ice cream/greeting guests.
When the food did get to us after ~20 mins, it wasn't as described. The three of us ordered the waffled grilled cheese sandwiches, none of which were waffled. One wasn't even on sourdough as advertised, but instead was on rye. The food was all reasonably warm and tasted good, so that was a plus. After having our meals and nearly completing them, our Awful Awfuls were all brought out, even though we ordered them as our drinks as the meal. The manager was supposed to bring them, but instead our server did. Waters weren't offered, so much of the wait time and meal went without a beverage.
All in all this seems to be a reflection of poor management/poor preparation. If it was busy and the servers or kitchen needed help, it went unanswered. The menus had great design and all the flavor was good, but the staff was the weak point here and the food didn't match the...
Read moreAfter going here for my entire life (I grew up in the neighborhood), I'm sad to say I won't ever be going back. I tried to be fair, plus I'm sentimental, so I gave it a chance to have three strikes before making this decision.
First was getting grilled cheese sandwiches (there aren't many vegetarian options) with my husband nearly a year ago that were just awful and horribly slow. I asked to sub wheat instead of rye, but they forgot. It was so slow that I didn't want to ask them to remake it. My husband likes rye, so he offered to swap, but we both found it inedible. Next was getting ice cream for myself and my grandmother this summer. I found a shard of metal in mine. When I brought it to the counter and showed it to the cashier, he didn't seem to know what to do, so I suggested he give me my money back and throw out that tub of ice cream. Last strike was going here with my mother at 1pm on a weekday last week. It took over 45 minutes from ordering to get our two salads. Granted, hers had chicken that needed to be grilled, but still...
(Also, it's 2017. It might be time to add at least one or two gluten-free, vegan, and remotely healthy options.)
Sorry, Newport Creamery, it's been great, but we're over.
Thanks for the memories, the Awful Awfuls, the PBF & Pieces sundaes, and lots of great times with my 7th and 8th grade classmates back in the day. Oh, and the plastic ice cream containers I used to wear on my...
Read moreThe experience was horrendous on every level possible:
my family of 4 was the second group on the restaurant behind a 2 top. it took about 40 minutes to receive our meal the meal was incorrect and missing many components we didn't receive silverware until a separate table that ALSO didn't have silverware spoke up for themselves and for us, about 5 minutes after meal arrival
I have 2 kids, 5yrs and 2yrs. I will never come back here again. Hearing my kids say they're hungry and just not getting feedback on any issues was beyond frustrating.
The explanation we received for the horrendous service and meal was that they have a rookie working. I didn't realize it was okay to sacrifice meal quality for guests to train employees. I also didn't realize that it's acceptable to serve non-brand standard quality meals. Unless that was the bar Newport Creamery as a business sets for the quality of their meals for their guests to enjoy.
As a server in my previous career, I know the importance of keeping guests 100% informed, and prepped and ready to eat their meals.
As a manager once upon a time, I know the importance of ensuring only quality meals leave the kitchens for guests. ESPECIALLY when someone new is working to ensure they learn correct standards.
Leaving hungry, and getting...
