I'm rescinding my original review because I can't seem to find an email contact for the owner. I frequent Idle hour often because its hard to find an espresso in town that's palatable and they seem to get it right. A few weeks ago, while ordering, I pulled my mask down to make sure the employee heard me say "decaf," and instead of confirming my order, the young guy proceeded to ask me to pull my mask back up. I was perturbed because there is plexiglass between us and he was wearing a mask. I obliged his request, got my coffee and left. Fast forward to just a few days ago when I returned to pick up Tepuy donuts with my special needs child in tow. I decided to order a coffee to go. Instead of the employee asking me if they could help me, she proceeds to ask me if I could put a mask on and if not, they have one for me. While, my medical exemption is no ones business but my own, I proceeded to let her know I could not wear a mask because my child has special needs. What I shouldn't have to explain to anyone is, my daughter is non verbal. Her safety and social-emotional well-being is strongly dependent on being able to seem my face for communication. She proceeded to then ask me what she could help me with...I told her I had a donut pick up but also wanted coffee to go. She told me I would have to wait outside while they made my coffee-because I wasn't wearing a mask. Now mind you, their establishment is very small- social distancing doesn't occur when you take a seat. Their doors were wide open & me standing inside near their entrance/exit while I wait for my coffee was honoring social distancing more than their patrons sitting at tables and on the couch. I can empathize for small businesses who are trying to enforce the mandate to keep their doors open, but where is the empathy for those who patronize their establishment with medical exemptions? Do people just continue to be ignorant to how the viral process works? I enjoyed it while it lasted, but...

Read moreMy friend and I just returned from this place; it literally HURT to go here. Let me explain...
Some places in downtown Raleigh are all about presentation and totally lacking on the actual delivery, or even basic customer care. Going into Idle Hour right when they opened this morning personified all of that.
We both ordered their hot coffee. My friend ordered a coffee cheesecake and I ordered two donuts. Her dessert was like totally flavorless flan, bereft of any coffee and only a hint of chocolate. Both of my donuts tasted like they had been frozen leftovers and thawed, with the quality akin to the back of the freezer at a Food Lion in the closeout section.
The coffee? I don't get how you can call yourself roasters when it is something you can make much better grinding your own beans from home. We know because we brought our own to comparison test. We've been to other coffee roasters (The Muse is a good one), so we can tell when someone knows what they're doing or doesn't care.
Speaking of not caring...
When we sat down at one of their outdoors tables, my friend literally fell over and scrapped her leg on the pavement because of a missing bolt in her patio bistro chair! I went inside and told the person behind the counter what happened and how dangerous it was. When he came outside, did he even ask if my friend was allright? Did he offer to get her anything? No. He only cared about his chair and brought it inside, and didn't come out to us again.
Idle Hour? More like a wasted hour.
We really wanted to do something fun and relaxing together on our day off. Instead we got a remind that a good presentation does not guarantee a good experience.
On the plus side, it reminded me why never to tip a place in advance. That's just TIPSTORTION.
Oh well. Misery loves company, even when...
