I'm impressed by the ambiance and decor but unfortunately the food and service was very disappointing. First of all they're overpriced but most importantly they do not care about their customers. My mom has a food allergy but loves to eat the eggplant dishes so every Chinese restaurant we've gone to here in the valley has accommodated her by switching the sauce to a gluten-free alternative however the chef at Shang Hai Inn would not do this for my mother even though we explained the situation. Although disappointed, We decided to stay and my mom ordered a different item which she did not enjoy because it was bland, shrimp chowmein, which was twice as much money as the dish she cane in for but could not order. My dish which was the Sesame Chicken, although the sauce was delicious, the chicken itself was overcooked and dry. Overall was not a good experience for the first time and we will not be back because when I told the server I wanted to talk to the manager to tell him about our experience he would not get the manager for me and told me to tell him instead so I told him and it was very obvious that he did not care whatsoever about our experience and did not offer an apology nor a discount. I paid the bill and gave him a 20% tip regardless but they do not deserve a good review for the above reasons and customers with food allergies should know they should stay away...
Read moreThis place is really overpriced. I ordered takeout on Oct. 21, 2023 and ordered 6 egg rolls, kung pao chicken, chicken chow mein, pork fried rice and honey walnut shrimp. For the five items it came to $93, which I thought was expensive. The establishment needs to list prices online so customers are aware before they order.
I also wasn't happy with how they presented my overall order to me. I don't want to be picking up my order that's been placed in a box. Everything should be placed in bags. It just seems very unsanitary that this restaurant operates this way. The place did get a Grade A from Riverside County Health department, but still everything should be put in a bag and not in a used Kirkland Costco box.
As far as the food, I thought the egg rolls, pork fried rice, chicken chow mein and honey walnut shrimp were all good. The kung pao chicken was just okay. I probably wouldn't visit this establishment again because it is too expensive and it left me questioning how sanitary the place is. The outside and inside of the restaurant...
Read moreWe visited on Feb 7th as my wife had a yearning for Chinese food. We are Palm Desert residents of over 30 years and decided to try this place again. I am sorry to say the experience was not good and we will not be back! We had fried shrimp to start which tasted just of aging oil from the frier. We then had musho pork and Mongolian beef. Luckily the mushu came with Hoi sin sauce as it was the only way to get any flavor into the beef. Extra sauce gave the dishes some sadly missing taste, without it, the beef was very dull. We mentioned this to the staff in the hope the chef found the spice rack. The service was attentive and the atmosphere was pleasant. However the food quality and warm red wine means this place is off our...
