Our stop at Kuya's was purely a last minute addition to a fantastic night out, the sole Google result for a "bar open near me" in Randolph. What we expected to be a quick after dinner beverage turned into a fantastic hour and a half at the bar with Patty (front of house /owner) and her husband (Chef) talking about food, tradition and the importance of finding Just.The.Right.Ingredients - and of course, the magic of what goes into the perfect grilled pineapple barbecue pork belly!
My wife had a great cider on tap followed by Patty's take on a MaiTai - the Pat Tai (wow!!) and while I was just drinking water, the only thing that gave our fantastic conversation a run for the money for top item of the night was a tasting plate of their pork belly (gratis!!) - grilled over open flame, marinated in just the right Pinoy soy sauce and pineapple barbecue sauce - a perfect sear and char, the fat buttery with exactly the right mouth feel and the meat cooked to perfection.
Sometimes it only takes to single bite to know everything you need to know about a restaurant and more importantly, the passionate people who make it a place that's worth visiting - again and again.
Take the trip to Randolph, order whatever you want - just make sure it's the pork belly (the salmon or Tofu kebabs look mighty good too! We'll probably see you there, because this spot just made Randolph a culinary destination for us....
Read moreNo, this is not Kuya's, the previous operator, which was fantastic.
I thought my experience last week may have been unusual until I read the recent reviews. My wife and I stopped for dinner after finding out another of our faves in town was closed. It was not busy at all when we came in. We both ordered a beer (good selection) and ordered our food when the beers came out. 35-40 minutes later, when we saw the couple next to us (who were seated after we came in) had their food, we had to flag down the server to ask about our dinners. We were told that our order ticked "had been lost". I asked how much longer it would be and was told ten minutes. I gave them that ten minutes, then plunked down money for our beers and left. I ended up making dinner at home for us.
Though they looked understaffed, with two servers (one acting as host), our server never checked on us after the beers were served. I suggested that she should be doing that every so often for the tables in her section. She was nice enough, but seemed unconcerned about how we were doing.
The lack of responses to some of the Google reviews also speaks volumes; they don't seem to want to get better.
I hope they can get their act together because it's a nice spot and Randolph needs a good option there, but right now I cannot ever consider going back or recommending this place to...
Read moreSpecials reflect some of my favorite flavors from the former merger between Kuya's and One main. Now that the restaurant has returned to just One Main Tap and Grill it's nice to see some of things like classy ambiance are still present. Enjoyed a great relaxing evening with jazz, candlelight and excellent service. So nice. Absolutely loved the carrot ginger soup. Slaw in the sweet chili chicken sandwich was great as well. Hope to see both again on the menu. Would definitely come back for the soup. That said, much of the menu items have changed back to more traditional grill fare and I didn't see many items on the standard menu that appealed to my personal pallette. Various smash burgers, salads and tacos are still on the menu. Most people should be able to find something they enjoy. Bar and table top seating options available. Hope to hear about any future live music options in the email alerts I receive. Thanks for keeping patrons informed about the specials and special events electronically. Really helps...
