Wow. Wit & Grit is amazing. First of all the food is excellent. I asked the server what she recommended and she deftly asked if I was looking for something filling. Since I was, she recommended the breakfast wrap. I ordered it with all of the fillings. It was fabulous. A couple of things I loved about it. First, the ratios were perfect and the individual ingredients were excellent. Second, the wrap was perfectly seared. Third, they have multiple hot sauce options. It's a minor thing, but I'm not a fan of Tabasco. It drives me insane when that is the only choice. I like optionality with my hot sauce :)
Great food and great service is enough for me in general, but the environment was also exceptional. The decor has a wonderful combination of a contemporary feel and a vintage miner theme. The blue painted walls, the mural of cardinals in birch trees, give the space a warm welcoming feel. At the same time, it is contrasted nicely by old saws, oil lamps and an assortment of rustic equipment decorating the walls. It's a cool vibe.
Lastly, the people are great. Both the folks who work there and own the place and the customers who came in. The tables are set up in a big open floor plan. A family of 20 easily set up for a reunion brunch on one side of the room. An older couple was doing the crossword in contented silence and a couple with a young kid was playing uno at a high top. You aren't required to buss your table but customers were doing it anyway because it is Vermont... In the end, I'm not one bit surprised by the atmosphere, given the genuine warm reception we received from the owner who was cheerfully behind the bar serving customers as we walked in.
There was even a local musician setting up to play music on a Saturday morning. We unfortunately had to leave for a wedding before she started.
I'll be returning to Wit & Grit....
Read moreThis past weekend will be my last time going to Wit and Grit. The owner's snippy attitude regarding poorly trained staff resulting in unacceptable service was the last straw. We asked an employee for mustard and what transpired would have been comical if it wasn't so pitiful. Over the course of 10 minutes or so, it took this employee two trips to the kitchen speaking to the line cook and a trip to what I believe to be their stockroom and he still couldn't find the mustard. I then sought out the owner and asked for mustard indicating that the employee was apparently unable to find it. The owner proceeded to the same line cook and returned with a container of mustard, when I mentioned that the employee needed training, Hannah snapped back "he's only been working here a week so give him a break." Now mind you, I didn't say anything to the server about his inability to do the simplest thing, nor was I loud, rude or otherwise nasty to Hannah. Hannah's response really took my friend and I aback. Obviously, the server hadn't been asking the line cook for the mustard otherwise he would have returned with it just as Hannah had. The fact that Hannah not only didn't apologize for the poor service but clearly believes that it was acceptable speaks to how she values (or doesn't) her customer base. This incident happened at 10:45 or 11:00 on a Friday, and the restaurant was not at all busy. The food is okay, but frankly, Prince Street Cafe (at Valley Bowl) has a more extensive menu and portions are larger, with atmosphere being about equal, it will be my choice from now on. Sorry Hannah, but you had the opportunity to make the situation right but instead you made it 10 times worse. (And as a size 8/10 with narrow hips, the metal chairs are too narrow, squishing one's backside...
Read moreI visited the place because of the photos, it looked nice and had a good atmosphere. Bad service, bad bad bad food, I ordered eggs with vegetables and they charged me for a burrito, I asked for them not to burn it and they brought it to me dry and black, I only ate the avocado, so I hope they understood that they gave me burnt eggs. The tots were cold from the fridge, apparently they only put them in the microwave for two minutes. First and last time I visited the place. The only good thing I can say is that it has a good atmosphere.
I just wrote my experience at your restaurant, if they don't have what I ordered, it was easy to say no, the eggs tasted burnt and I told the waitress before ordering that I wanted them soft scramble because I instantly detected an overcooked egg on my palate. If I check my plate I only eat the avocado. The tots were cold and hard if I check that plate I could also see that they were left whole on the plate for the same reason. I'm not talking about the costs but that no one explained to me that they would charge for a burrito because they don't sell eggs with vegetables. I apologize for writing my experience at your restaurant, what I can assure you is that what I wrote...
