I stopped in for a late night dinner, ordering kids sized spicy chicken teriyaki and regular yakisoba to go (default when trying a new teriyaki joint). As I waited inside a small but spacious area I was given a bottle of water for free and having friendly conversation about their meals and what make them unique. I have never been in a more welcoming restaurant than this, I felt like I was back at my auntie's house for the weekend having no trouble tuning out the sounds of passing traffic outside as the person who took my order explained to me that they put asian mayo and cheese on the rice which balances out some of the salty flavor from the teriyaki sauce.
When opening my meal at my house I had discovered I hadn't got my spicy chicken bowl BUT it was remarkably delicious, coming with a side of broccoli and a base of rice with cheese and mayo slathered on. This combination of different flavors took me for a surprise and realization of what I have been missing for such a long time.
When trying the yakisoba I again experienced so many flavors as well as having the noodles and vegetables that were cooked to perfection and chicken that was grilled just right.
Sumo Teriyaki has become my new go to teriyaki restaurant every Sunday and possibly even twice a week because of the varying prices (kids, regular, large) making...
Read moreI REALLY wanted teriyaki tonight and saw this new place had opened up near us, so we decided to try it. Great decision.
One thing before I describe the food itself: the portion sizes here are really big, so order accordingly! I had the spicy chicken bowl because a) I love spicy food and b) I was intrigued by the addition of mozzarella. The spice level could have been a tiny bit higher for me personally, but the flavor was fantastic, and the mozzarella adds a really nice flavor/texture contrast. The steamed broccoli was cooked right, too, with the perfect amount of crunch. My husband got the chicken yakisoba, which was tasty and filling with a good balance of chicken, noodles, and veggies. We also got to try some of the orange chicken, which was flavorful and well-balanced, not overly sweet like it can be at some places. We got this as takeout, so I think the crispiness of the orange chicken suffered a little from that, and I’d love to order it again dining in. The breading was good, but I bet it’s way better served immediately.
Overall: You should try Sumo the next time you want to eat a teriyaki bowl the size of your face! I’m excited to have them nearby, and we’ll...
Read moreWe got takeout here a few months ago, and it was a real mixed experience. Price wise, it seems a bit expensive at first, but the amount of food they give you is INSANE. I'm not exaggerating, we had multiple days of meals from the two items we ordered. The ingredients are fresh and very high quality; the chicken had no gristle or bad bits you can't eat.
So why only three stars? Because, unfortunately, the food is quite bland and lacking in much flavour. Worse, the teriyaki sauce was a sort of...gelatin. You can see looking at the photo how it's not sauce, it's a gloopy substance. The food was picked up right from the kitchen fresh and I was eating it within 10 minutes. So it was hot, but the teriyaki "gel" wouldn't melt. That was pretty gross.
One of their "signature" things is putting cheese with the rice. The first bite I had, I thought "Oh, this is pretty tasty!". By the third bite I was more "Huh, this is kind of weird tasting". Re-heating the rice later? It's not good at all. So I am not a fan of cheese in rice.
Maybe I'll try this place again in a while and hope they at least switch to teriyaki...
