I'm hoping this message will be shared & reach the right party to help prevent the same experience of stereotyping & social bias treatment upon anyone in the future.
This was a deliberate attack against me and my 10 year old that should never have occurred. My experience of obvious stereotyping and social bias was exceptionally prevalent. Here’s what happened.
I checked-in like any other guests would at the front and then I was approached by the life guard that there’s a policy of only 12 people for lap swimming so he cannot have me or my son there, despite the fact that I had paid and checked-in for (2) people at the front desk with my son clearly visible, and there were other guests present, but why did he approach us of all people?
Regardless of my repeated polite effort to inform the life guard that it is my first time at this facility and 1) I even inquired if my son would be eligible to lap swim at the check-in, 2) with the Director and 3) again with the lifeguard who all confirmed yes so why did they wait until we got in to the water to inform me with elevated demeanor that my son is not eligible?
I’m a modest but sufficiently educated Asian American working mother who do not ever intentionally want to cause trouble so I certainly don’t appreciate being spoken to as if I can’t understand the American language ( spoken to me very slowly and loudly) and like I deliberately tried to scam for $5 lap swim when I could’ve swam anywhere else in the state of Washington today. Lastly, I don’t appreciate the lifeguard trying to tell me and my son that we can’t swim when we were, even with the kick-boards, swimming faster than other swimmers around us. I repeated that this is my first time at this facility 3X but he continuously ignored me and continued speaking to me like I intended to challenge him. I was polite the entire time up until I’ve had enough, which is why I certainly hope there will be more relevant communicative, stereotyping and social bias training enforced to prevent this experience...
Read moreI decided I wanted to jump back into lap swimming this summer and was looking around nearby community centers & clubs to join then noticed that Henry Moses Aquatic Center has outdoor space for lap swims some evenings. I was looking for a place thats nearby, reasonable rate, and has swimming options that work with my schedule. Ive been to this area for friends' sports tournaments and work meetings at the nearby Carco Theatre and thought the kids slide area looked so fun!
Getting a pass for the summer for Renton residents is $60 for adults ($7 for one visit) & I purchased mine online before heading in. They gave me a key card which helps get through the gate with ease among in and out traffic.
The pool is generally a little smaller and warmer because it is a recreation pool yet the amenities are pretty well maintained (swimming supplies, locker rooms) and the staff is pretty helpful and kind. I saw some people reviewing that the cleanliness is a factor for them and i haven't observed anything similar yet do know that if you are wary of this or plan on visiting, it is a community pool, and like many others, things do happen on occasion especially with water and youth is concerned.
The kids area is separate from the water aerobics and lap pool area so im not sure if that helps but seems the staff is on it to resolve if a situation may happen. Otherwise the lap swims, lane lines are put out, & they try to make it a fun environment with music in...
