Some of the dishes are real good, the rest are just...meh. average. Typical. But my biggest problem is the price. I feel like this place is really overpriced. I'd expect a lot better ingedients and end-product for these prices.
I like their carne asada entree, but everything else has been no where as good. Chalk that up to subjectivity, but objectively, I think the beans, rice, and tortillas are not great. I've had a lot of great Mexican food and most of the food here is pretty standard Mexican family restaurant flavor. Except for the carne asada, most places it's terrible. Here it is good.
Check your expectations at the door when you want a burrito. They don't make burritos I the way you might expect. They take a brittle flour tortilla, out some stuff on it, fold it over and put it on a plate with cheese and sauce on top. Essentially a large flour enchilada. I don't like this, and the flour tortillas they use are very brittle. I'm not big on flour tortillas but it tore like a corn tortilla. To each their own. If you want a big flour enchilada, there you go. I just didn't like it. It's not a "burrito" place.
The staff is fine. It's a family run place and you can meet the family. No complaints there. They are attentive and friendly.
Price is my biggest...
Read moreThe pandemic has affected restaurants and small business differently. Before the pandemic El Rancho Viejo was the perfect spot for a quick and delicious lunch. Portions were generous, service was quick and friendly and overall it was a great price for two for lunch. After the pandemic, service is short and unpleasant. My chicken is overcooked and missing the quantity of vegetables it normally comes with. Having ordered the same dish each and everytime I visit for the past 2 years its easy to compare, although I do wish I had taken a picture of today's unfortunate meal. The most upsetting part is being charged $3.50 for a soda, asking for a second refill and being told I'd be charged $3.50 again. Mind you, had this policy been noted ANYWHERE on the provided menu or had been enforced at anytime prior to the pandemic I would have no reason to be upset. In addition, I didn't appreciate the waitress watching over me as I signed my check at the counter. In the past the older women who usually helps us stands back away from the counter. This younger, heavier set women leaned over the counter while I signed. Nonetheless, we won't be back and we encourage you, kind reader, to choose somewhere else....
Read moreWhat a joke this place is. It started out good with above average chips and salsa, but things went downhill quick after that. I ordered their carne asada burrito that cost about 12 dollars. It didn't come with beans or rice and it was covered in a sauce that basically was tomato soup. Yuck! The meat was tough and cold. My wife ordered a taco and enchilada combination and was equally disappointed. The taco was in a generic store bought taco shell and the supposed shredded beef was more like Luke warm chunks of roast beef (not a bit appetizing). Her enchilada had the same type of sauce that my burrito had, aka store bought tomato soup. On top of the substandard food, the restaurant was ice cold and made for a miserable dining experience. Don't even think of trying this place if you're curious about it, just drive into Vancouver for better Mexican options, such as Jorge's Margarita Factory which is excellent or even the fash food chain "Muchas Gracias" which is significantly better and more authentic than the garbage they serve at El...
