When I found out Sugar's Barbecue had left, I was disappointed: they weren't amazing but it was solid food plus the only close place for barbecue. My wife, friend, and I were headed to the corner store to refill the booze fridge when we noticed someone had moved into their old area. We checked out the menu and it looked VERY promising, but we did our best to temper our expectations. We've been burned before - when the menu looks amazing and the prices are about right, then the food is on par with Banquet frozen pot pies.
Not so here. Holy hell, were we pleasantly surprised. The food is even BETTER than you might expect. We had one each of the three hamburgers, a slice of cheesecake, plus the proprietor sold me on the smoked carrots - yes, you read that right. Smoked carrots.
All of it was excellent. The hamburger patties were indeed the right size for a half pound burger and were cooked about medium rare to medium. No chewy, overcooked meat pucks. I can't eat wheat or things get ugly, so I got a gluten free bun. I'm so used to them being mealy and tasteless, like a couple of kitchen sponges, but this was actually good. The only "issue" I had with my burger is it was so big I had trouble biting into it, so I ended up using a knife and fork. Winners' problems.
The smoked carrots were great. We didn't know what to expect. I imagined some sort of carrot salad with liquid smoke. These were big slices of legitimately smoked carrot served with a dipping sauce. The carrots perfectly straddled that line been too soft and too hard, with a pleasing smoky kick. So I did it: I ate my vegetables!
We have yet to eat the cheesecake because we were so full from dinner. I did try a bit of the included fig rosemary jam sauce and it's delicious, having a sweet, herbal, fruity, and almost tea-like flavor.
They have a lot more options we still want to trry. One of the very aspects of Nest is that I won't have to drive to Vancouver for fairly mediocre Killer Burger the next time someone is in the mood...
Read moreWell, I wanted to like this place because of all the good reviews, but we just had the absolute WORST experience. We ordered our food and after 30 minutes - and literally watching every single person who ordered after us receive their food - my husband finally went up and checked in. Tanya said it "wasn't ready yet." Right. We knew that couldn't possibly be true. About 10 minutes before my husband went to check on our order, we watched the gentleman who ordered right after us get an order, then come back, and stand and wait for another order. We assumed they must have given him our order. But that's not what Tanya said. So we waited. Another. 15. Minutes. And watched several more people - who ordered AFTER my husband went up to check on our order! - get their orders. What?! I finally went up and asked Tanya to be honest with me - did they lose our order. She admitted they gave it to the gentleman who ordered after us. So I asked why she wasn't just honest about that with my husband, and oh hey by the way - maybe make our order a priority now?!? I asked if they were even working on our order. She said they were. And left it at that. I then asked her how she was going to make this right for us. She offered to continue making our order and refund us. I accepted that. 10 minutes later… and again watching other people getting their orders!!... still no order for us. Finally my husband went up, got our refund, and we left. We were there almost an hour. Keep in mind, our order STILL WASN'T DONE when he went up the last one. Absolutely ridiculous. We understand that people make mistakes. But how they chose to handle this mistake was an awful display of customer service. By not immediately working on our order but continuing to knock all the other orders out while we waited was absolutely ludicrous to us. And also not offering a refund until I asked how they would make it right was also disappointing. Big zero for customer...
Read moreI would like to start by saying I may change my rating to 5 stars if my next trip is better. Mar 20 at 5pm. Ordered 2 ruben sandwiches. I asked 3 different times for extra crispy fries. The third time the owner/Mgr said he was writing it down. We got soggy cold fries. I should have checked them before I left. But, when you ask three times you don't expect there to be an issue. I have eaten here 4 times over the last few weeks. The sandwiches are fantastic. The first time I asked for extra crispy fries, I got exactly what I asked for. The next three times I got soggy fries. That is why I asked 3 times this last trip. Now I am kicking myself for leaving a tip on the credit card display. Tips are for extra service. I did...
