First, the good: The food was nice for the most part. Everything was hot and fresh. Our two main dishes (lumberjack bowl and chicken & waffles) were good, but I wouldn’t say great. Portions were definitely large. Flavor was good, even if just a bit too salty. Coffee tasted fresh.
For the not-so-good: First and foremost, their menu states that the waffle in the chicken and waffles is a Belgian waffle, and it is not. It’s a liege waffle, which, in my opinion, is a more “elevated” waffle anyway, but it should not state that it’s one thing and be served as another. Especially as the type of waffle changes the dish completely. Liege waffles are almost like a sugar cookie/waffle cross, with thick dough made using large sugar crystals. So, a super sweet and dense waffle vs. the larger, fluffier, and less sweet Belgian (or Brussels, really) waffle. Not a huge issue, just state the correct waffle on the menu, ya know? Also, I looked around at some other plates and believe that all the waffles on their menu are served as liege waffles, but labeled as Belgian waffles. So that’s interesting.
The sides were all fine, but not great. The fried green tomatoes had too much batter and too thin slices on the tomatoes themselves. $4 for 3 tomatoes also seems pretty steep to me, especially for very thin slices with mostly batter.
The biscuit and gravy were also fine, gravy definitely tasted like a mix vs homemade, and the biscuits were on the thinner side and stuck to your mouth instead of being light and fluffy.
The pancake, I’m so sorry, was abysmal. Maybe just caught them on a bad day because the other review photos of the pancakes looked nice (this was actually the whole reason we chose this restaurant in the first place), but the pancakes were almost crepe-thin. Not fluffy, very eggy, and super flat.
Their “heirloom tomatoes” are absolutely not heirloom tomatoes. Another menu issue.
Overall, I think this place is good, but they could be great if they were honest/clear on their menu vs the actual food items you’re served and if they put a bit more effort and intention into the cooking and preparation of every single dish, not just the mains.
The service was excellent and the...
Read moreIf you go to Himes Breakfast House you HAVE to ask for LISA! Lisa gave QUALITY service! She was attentive to every detail while training Promise (another server) and taking care of many other tables! She was extremely knowledgeable of the menu and how dishes are prepared; including sauces and syrups. She gave insight on the most popular dishes and their elevated flavors for easier decision making. She was relatable and warm without being overbearing.
We voted Lisa in the Himes costume contest . She dressed as a minion! 🤣 How fun!
We ordered: *catfish & scrambled eggs with cheese & a side of Jessie’s grits(bacon, scallions and cheese) -which my husband devoured! So good!
*full French toast (6 triangles of toast) they offer blue berry, lemon citrus, butterscotch rum, espresso and regular syrups! Butterscotch rum syrup is what normally comes on their banana French toast and it was our favorite!
We also tried the blue berry compost that usually comes on the blue berry French toast and it’s a great addition to the French toast but still not better than the butterscotch rum syrup.
*biscuit and gravy -not better than the French toast . It was a bit too lukewarm for me but still decent.

Read moreWe were traveling that morning and decided to have a sit down meal rather than McDonalds again. Arrived probably after a Saturday rush at 10:15 and found no waiting which was good, but it still took about 35min to be served food. A longer than usual wait apparently as the server did stop by and reassure us that the food would come out soon. Wife’s omelette looked great. She actually likes grits and said both the omelette and grits were good. My over-medium eggs were not even what I’d consider over easy. I chose regular home fries as opposed to loaded (with onions, peppers etc) but they came with onions anyway. Both went in the trash. I didn’t feel like waiting for my eggs to be cooked more after our wait already. The catfish filet was very good, however. The coffee was extremely strong. My parents would have loved it. You could have stood a spoon in it. I’m certain this place performs better as it was obviously popular, but today was not our day. We’ll stick to McDonald’s on the remainder...
