Re-review 5 years later: Having gotten used to the Rochester food scene (😭)...the food here is a little better now. Naans still dry. Most curries were spiced well and some even had spiciness. Rice pudding was too sweet and still thin. More chutney variety and they were good. There are better places to have an Indian buffet in town but this is ok at $15 for weekend lunch buffet.
Original review: As an Indian person, I know not to expect the best, home-cooked style food in an Indian restaurant. Still, I have some thoughts.
The food was so-so. The raita (yogurt) tasted too sour, like it was going bad. The kheer (rice pudding) was just atrocious. It was orange, the liquid was way too thin, and lacked any flavor. The chutneys also had way too much water in them, yielding no flavor. The curries were okay, but tasted stale. The chicken wings was the only interesting thing about the buffet, they were okay. If you picked up a naan (bread), by the time you sat down the naan would be kind of hard, which probably means it's stale.
The ambiance was very boring, there is no music and the place is eerily quiet. I think due to a lack of competition, locals think this represents Indian food and the majority of reviews seem to indicate that they like this restaurant. But it is not truly Indian food, nor is it remotely close to being good Indian food. The weekend lunch price was about $12 which is way too much for the quality provided.
I'm honestly tempted to open my own Indian restaurant to showcase the Indian culture and...
Read moreIndia Garden is one of the best Indian restaurants i've ever been to and i'm from Houston, Tx where there are tons of Indian restaurants! I felt compelled to write a review after seeing some negative reviews, and i believe these are from one-off's like a fly in the curry which we've been there at least 10 times and never had an issue. The buffet is excellent (and only go to buffet's since most Indian restaurants are too spendy otherwise) and the food is always fresh and of excellent quality. The Samosa's are great and i also enjoy the mango rice pudding. The only negative i would give the food is like most Indian restaurants in MN it is not spicy enough. Delicious but just not enough heat as i'm use to. The service is also great and i never have to wait for a fill up on my water glass. (Also, you always pay at the register and i've never seen anyone given a bill at the table). We recently went to a well-known Indian restaurant in St. Paul and left thinking we should have waited until we got back to Rochester and went to...
