On the recommendation from a dear friend, we made the drive from Kenosha to Rockford to try JMK. It WAS worth the trip for sure. Everything was great about this place. The sushi options are amazing and very flavorful. I want to give 5 stars straight across the board. My only complaint, which some people might not agree with me on, is the size of the pieces of sushi. With food, generally, bigger is better. Not so much with sushi. The rolls were so big that I had to cut the piece in half just to eat it. (And, I admit, I have a big mouth, lol) I have never had to do this before & I didn’t like it. I like being able to take one whole piece and eat the whole piece. Sounds like first world problems, I know, sorry. But, that’s part of the experience of eating sushi, in my opinion. If they could tighten up those rolls a little more, it would be 5 stars. Overall, a great place for sushi. I would recommend them to anyone. Just be prepared for the extraordinary sushi roll sizes…Enjoy!

First and only time we have been here. Won't be a second time. The failures started with the front of the house at the door. My wife and I came to the reception desk, and the 2 girls working there just stared at us blankly. There was no "hello" or "welcome to so and so" or "how can I help you." We had to ask for a place to sit, then had to ask how the setup went as far as if we could order Hibachi from the regular dinner side of the house or not. The miso soup was delivered... hair on the bowl. Sushi roll came, no soy sauce dipping bowls. Silverware had old food on it. Food was bland tasting. Trash floating in the fish pond right outside our window. Fruit flies were a constant nuisance. Waitstaff were inattentive, slow and nit well trained. I can't say it enough... this was not a good experience from start to finish.

The presentation and artistry of this establishment really shine through, and that is well worth the cost for a lot of people. The chefs make it a beautiful form of live entertainment with pyrotechnics and tricks that you won't expect! Along with that the decor is elegant and traditional Japanese inspired. It is clear that this is a well thought out place in both style and theming. The food isn't bad, but it isn't great either. A lot of it is really salty and without a deep definition of flavor. The sushi slices are also a little on the large side which makes them hard to consume gracefully, and compared to other places in the area the food seemed around average, but it's priced at exquisite. The prices should be lowered or the food should be enhanced for what they are charging.

IF YOU WANT A REAL HIBACHI EXPERIENCE DONT COME TO JMK NIPPON IT WAS ABSOLUTELY THE WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!! NOT ONCE DID THE CHEF INTRODUCE HIMSELF! THE CHEF IGNORED ME AND MY FRIEND THE ENTIRE NIGHT! SPOKE SPANISH THE ENTIRE TIME WE WERE THERE! YOU WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT HE KNEW THE OTHER CUSTOMERS THE WAY HE ENTERTAINED THEIR SIDE OF THE TABLE! HE HAD HIS BACK TURNED TO US THE ENTIRE TIME! THE ONLY TIME THE CHEF SPOKE TO ME AND MY FRIEND WAS TO ASK IF WE WANTED MORE SAUCE BEFORE HE EXITED THE TABLE! WHEN WE WERE ASKED ABOUT THE CHEF SERVICE WE WERE COMPLETELY HONEST AND WE TOLD THE WAITER THAT HE WAS ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! THE WAITER WENT TO GO GET THE MANAGER AND SHE CAME TO ASK US WHAT HAPPENED WE EXPRESSED OUR UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE TO HER! AND SHE THEN ASKED IF WE COULD DESCRIBE WHAT THE CHEF LOOKED LIKE! SADLY WE COULD’NT GIVE A PROPER DESCRIPTION BECAUSE WE ONLY SEEN THE BACKSIDE OF THE CHEF THE ENTIRE NIGHT! THE MANAGER SAID THAT SHE WOULD GO SEE EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED WHEN SHE SPOKE WITH HER CHEF AND GET BACK TO US! SHE NEVER CAME BACK THE WAITER HAD TO GET HER ONCE AGAIN! AND WHEN SHE RETURNED THIS TIME SHE HAD AN ENTIRE ATTITUDE! THEN PROCEEDS TO TELL ME AND MY FRIEND THAT THE CHEF SAID THAT THE OTHER PARTY WAS ASKING HIM QUESTIONS ABOUT HIM! AND THATS STILL UNACCEPTABLE BECAUSE NOT ONCE DID HE GIVE US THE SAME OPPORTUNITY TO ASK HIM ANYTHING! AND THEN SHE CONTINUES ON AND SAYS THAT THE HIBACHI CHEFS DONT HAVE TO SPEAK TO THE TABLE IF THEY DONT WANT TOO! BUT THATS EXACTLY WHAT BAFFLES ME BECAUSE THATS WHAT YOU PAY FOR WHEN YOU CHOOSE TO SIT GRILL SIDE! THE SHOW! THE EXPERIENCE! THE RAZZLE DAZZLE! AND IF THAT IS THE CASE THEN THEY SHOULD NOT OFFER THE HIBACHI “GRILL SIDE SHOW” THEY SHOULD JUST COOK EVERYTHING IN THE KITCHEN! THE MANAGER CONTINUES TO SAY THAT NEXT TIME IT WILL WILL BE BETTER. WHICH IS ALSO A LIE BECAUSE I WAS JUST THERE A MONTH AGO FOR A BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND THEY SAID THE SAME THING! THEY WERE COMPLETELY RACIST TOWARDS MY FRIEND (THE BIRTHDAY GIRL) AND HER ENTIRE BIRTHDAY PARTY! THE MAJORITY OF THE PARTY DIDN’T BOTHER TO EAT THEIR FOOD BECAUSE THE EXPERIENCE WAS JUST THAT HORRIBLE!!! EVERYTHING FROM THE EXPERIENCE TO THE FOOD WHICH CAME OUT UNDER COOKED BY THE WAY WAS ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIC!!! I CAME BACK THINKING MAYBE THINGS WILL BE DIFFERENT THIS TIME LIKE THEY PROMISED! BUT CLEARLY THIS RESTAURANT IS ALL ABOUT MAKING FALSE PROMISES THAT THEY WILL NEVER KEEP!! AND DONT TELL THEM THAT YOUR SERVICE WAS ANYTHING LESS THAN GREAT CAUSE THEIR ENTIRE STAFF WILL GANG UP ON YOU LIKE THUGS!! THE MANAGER AND THE STAFF WAS EVERY BIT OF RUDE EVEN THREATENED TO CALL THE POLICE ON US AND PROCEEDED TO LIE AND SAY THAT WE WERE CAUSING A DISTURBANCE! JMK SERVICE HAS CHANGED TREMENDOUSLY! THE QUALITY HAS WENT DOWN DRASTICALLY! JMK NIPPON IS NOTHING MORE THAN A UNFRIENDLY, REGRETTABLE, LOW DOWN, INATTENTIVE, RACIST, POOR QUALITY, BYASS, LOUSY, INCONSISTENT, CRINGE WORTHY, SLEAZY,...

My recent visit to this restaurant left me with a mixed bag of impressions. While there were some positive aspects, there were also notable areas that need improvement.

Let's start with the positives. The restaurant boasts an upscale ambiance that exudes elegance, but without the exorbitant prices typically associated with such places. The accessible pricing is certainly a welcomed surprise, making it an attractive option for those seeking a nice dinner without breaking the bank.

The server assigned to our table was courteous and prompt, ensuring that our orders were taken swiftly. However, this is where the positivity ends, as the food brought to our table was incorrect, and disappointingly, no effort was made to rectify the mistake or offer a replacement dish. This lack of attention to detail was disheartening, especially when coupled with the absence of a birthday celebration for a member of our party who had hoped for a little something special.

Additionally, the hosts at the entrance could benefit from some training. Though they were not outright rude, their demeanor suggested they could use some improvement in their customer service skills. A warmer and more welcoming attitude would undoubtedly enhance the overall dining experience for patrons.

All things considered, this restaurant is suitable for a regular dinner outing, but I wouldn't recommend it as a birthday celebration destination, given the lack of any special acknowledgment. While the experience as a whole had its shortcomings, the restaurant's potential is evident.

In summary, I am giving it three stars primarily due to the overall experience, and the issues with the hosts were a significant factor in this rating. I sincerely hope that the management takes note of these areas for improvement, as addressing them could elevate the restaurant's standing in the future.

Please note that this review is based on my personal experience and may not necessarily reflect others' encounters at...

Update. Myself and my sons got pretty sick afterwards.

This was actually my first time here. I've driven by for years and have heard about it, but never went in. First thing I noticed when you walk in. The exit is also the entrance which puts people leaving squeezing by the ones waiting to be seated. Sitting at a table I look around at the mass of other tables and begin to feel like cattle. It was LOUD. like cafeteria loud. That completely broke any ambiance the place had. You couldn't hear the chef talking while he performed. The waitress did a good job of yelling to ask us anything. You could tell she's sick of this place. I don't blame her. The people who pack this place must not know how to cook because the food we make at home was way better than anything we ate here. This was for a family members birthday. I would've walked out otherwise. After viewing the menu, my eyes could only focus on prices. $20+ for any sushi roll worth ordering. We got the 2 cheapest $6 rolls. My fiance and I did not eat other than splitting 2 loosely rolled sushi's. $40-$60 per meal. Per person. We have 4 kids. So we made sure they ate, and we talked about going home and cooking some tilapia and rice for less than $2. The miso had zero seaweed and possibly no tofu. It's was broth. I mean, if you like dropping a normal person's weekly check on 1 meal...... more power to ya. But this, to me is just a way for a rich owner to take other rich people's money. If you value your dollar at all, it's a no brainer. If you can cook, it's a no brainer. I just didn't see any sort of value or special anything for a $400 dinner bill. If this offends you, then go ahead and eat there. Doesn't bother me. But, if you're like me and expect something special for this kind of money........ keep moving. Spend a fraction and get Valli sushi 1/2...
