Niwano Hana in Rockville is a solid spot for authentic Japanese food, offering fresh sushi, comforting dishes, and great service at reasonable prices.
One of my favorite dishes here is the chawanmushi—a silky, delicate steamed egg custard that’s packed with umami and perfectly executed every time. It’s a must-order for me! Their sushi is also high quality and fresh, and they offer a variety of classic Japanese dishes beyond sushi, including tempura, teriyaki, and noodles.
Prices are fair for the quality, with sushi rolls ranging around $7-$15, sashimi combos $25-$35, and other entrées in the $15-$25 range. The portions are generous, making it a great value for a satisfying meal.
Parking is easy and convenient, with plenty of spots in the shopping center lot, so you don’t have to stress about finding a space.
Overall, Niwano Hana is a reliable go-to for Japanese food in Rockville, whether you’re craving fresh sushi, a comforting bowl of miso soup, or a delicious chawanmushi. Definitely...
Read moreForty years ago this restaurant would have been a good enough representation of a Japanese restaurant, but my meal last night was flavorless, lacked depth, and the fish in the sushi and the chicken in the Udon tasted old. Ordered 6 rolls of sushi, Chicken Udon, Gyudon, and Tonkatsu. Sushi came out fast - almost too fast. Nice amount of fish but fish tasted like it had been sitting out for a while. The gyudon had a super sweet teriyaki sauce and tasted like sugar. Beef portion on the gyudon was miniscule. The Tonkatsu was supposed to be pork but tasted like chicken and also had a cloyingly sweet sauce. The Chicken Udon was inedible and I sent it back. Smelled like plastic and was bland. Service was excellent and fast but unfortunately that doesn't help when the food is so bad. Spent $100 even though the Udon was comped. At $30+ per person, the food should have...
Read moreCame in during a weekday late afternoon for dine in. Restaurant was empty except for one other occupied table. Waitress was very friendly and great at explaining the menu and answering our questions. Ordered the gyoza appetizer, sushi platter, a volcano roll, and the dragon roll. Didn’t find the pieces on the platter particularly fresh..fish had clearly been sitting out for awhile. Also, the seasoning spice they use on the volcano roll was really salty. The presentation of the specialty rolls was beautiful though! Overall a decent small lunch place for a quick meal and attentive service but fish taste/quality missed the mark. Fresher fish can be found elsewhere in the area if you’re craving...
