Marsouls - Roger, AR- Update-Have you every noticed how some place are very good when they open, the they get comfortable with what they are doing? Well, that is the story here. I will say that one of the owners came out to check on us as we were getting ready to leave. I say that improves my score because it shows he cares. The real issue was our waitress. She was not really attentive, we had to ask for napkins, and utensils. All this said I think the honest constructive critique is going to help. I’m not going to re-rate place right now. I would recommend you go and try it. This guy is giving his legacy, and his heart into this place. I say give them a try. You will see the effort.
This is the new kid on the Downtown. The sell of this place is the Atmosphere and the concept. Atmosphere is just as it sounds the way it is a restaurant that is your Nana’s place on a family get together. The concept is soul food from G-Ma’s recipes. They are doing it pretty well. The Burnt ends were flavored perfect in the house sauce that is obnoxiously good. They were a bit chewy, and could have gotten a touch more crisp on the exterior. The Chicken and waffles were heavily delish on the chicken end, and were slightly rushed/under on the waffle end. The shrimp and grits were excellent on the shrimp side. The grits were plain on the front and then flavor bomb on the second thought. It’s apparent that the apple dumpling is a crowd favorite, as it was sold out before 4pm. Next time I’ll up date you on that. The banana pudding is awesome. By awesome I mean not too sweet. A lot of times the Nana’s pudding is so sweet it’s heavy. This was light and delish. The pecan pie was like my Grandma’s it seemed purchased premade. If I have 1 suggestion, Bread pudding=soul food. I’d be looking forward to it. I feel like they are new and working out the fine touches, and they will improve at point or two very quickly. I defiantly recommend Marsouls, I recommend you go back and try another menu item. I know I’ll be back a few times and I’ll update their progress. My Rating is 6.7.

Read moreI really want to like the food more than I do, because I love the atmosphere and the idea. And honestly, the food is GOOD when ordered by themselves, but it's simply too sweet when most of the menu items are more sweet than savory. We have eaten here twice, the first on the soft open, and again last week. On the soft open, service was slow, but it's entirely to be expected, so I didn't take that into account writing this. Service was much better the second time, and we pleasantly enjoyed our time. The vibe is awesome, the staff we interacted with were friendly and prompt.
The food: It was good. But everything we ate was overly sweet. Deviled eggs: very good, with a sweet jelly on top Burnt ends: very good, super tender, the fat was rendered beautifully, with a very sweet BBQ sauce Baked beans: very good, probably some of the best baked beans I've had in a restaurant, but again, super sweet, with a heavy brown sugar taste Chicken and waffles: this one is a given, it comes with syrup. That's a menu item that's lacking in NWA, and it was delicious. Cheese burger: this one got me. It's so sweet and sticky, that we had to ask for napkins twice, because the jelly covered the buns. My burger was not cooked to order, I asked for medium, and was given a rare-medium rare temp, but I like rare burgers, so I didn't complain. I was surprised by how overwhelmingly sweet it was though The coleslaw: this was a unique side that I ordered both times. I can't decide if I like it or not, prompting me to order again. It's sweet. I was expecting a more of a vinegar taste, so it was very surprising. Mixed with the other items, I was put off by how much sugar I was consuming. The pork chops: very good, tender, limited fat, and even then, the fat was rendered well, so it had a great texture. But the sauce that comes with it, again, is simply too sweet.
I will be keeping an eye on the menu posted online for more options that are savory. We might try to come back for an intentionally savory experience, but as it is, it's difficult to order appetizers, an entree, and a side without being...
Read moreI took my mother here for her birthday. That was my error. I would categorize this place as southern and not a soul food place first of all. However, I would say that it is not a good representation of southern food either. I have been in the market for soul food in NWA for quite some time and I was thrilled to see one open up. Both my mom and I ordered the pork chops with two sides and sweet tea. The sweet tea was not sweet and quite bitter. When we asked the server to change out our drinks she sort of gave a huff and was frustrated that she would need to remake it. Later at dinner, we found out why she was so frustrated. Apparently, the taps for the beer and the drink machine were not working properly. My husband‘s beer was completely flat and she served it to us at the table and told us that it was flat. She offered no type of accommodation or to take it off the tab. We were just supposed to drink flat beer. My pork chops were fried okay enough, but lacked all manner of seasoning. The baked beans tasted like a can of van camps pork and beans microwaved. Soul food is typically packed with robust flavors and fried to golden perfection. I just didn’t feel any soul or any passion from my ancestors in this food. I truly take no pleasure in leaving reviews that are not overly complementary of businesses, but I pride myself on being honest. Dining out is an expensive privilege and I want people to be informed. The food was bad and the service was worse. Maybe in a year or two with new staff and new recipes and feedback from customers they will...
