The Pie Is Legendary… But Don’t Skip the Shrimp BLT or That Peach Pork Chop! I travel a lot for work and this occasion was no exception... driving from our home in Austin to take a flight out of Houston enroute to NYC for a Workcation with Not the HR Lady (a work trip, bleisure, over spring break with kids & husband in tow... doable, I promise, and fun if you let it be).
Let me just say it: Royers Round Top Café is not a secret, but it does feel like one — and if you’ve ever driven the backroads of Texas between Houston and Austin, you know this little gem in Round Top is what road trip legends are made of.
This isn’t just a halfway stop... it’s honestly a pilgrimage. And one we make often. Maybe too often.
Family-owned and full of heart, Royers feels like your coolest aunt & uncle decided to open a diner with their rock band sons and then handed the menu over to a Southern food wizard. It’s tiny. It’s unpretentious. And every single thing on the menu is comfort food at its most unhinged (in the best way).
Here’s what you absolutely need to order:
The Shrimp BLT – grilled, crispy, tangy, magical. Fried Green Tomatoes – Bright and briny perfection. Fried Chicken – Golden, juicy, and will haunt you (in a good way). The Peach Pork Chop – I can’t even talk about it without getting emotional. Sweet, savory, bold — the holy trinity of Texas flavors.
And then there’s the pie.
Which, if you’ve been to Royers, you already know is some of the best pie in the literal world (they even sell it on Goldbelly, worldwide). I’m not exaggerating. I’ve already mentally planned an event around them just so I have an excuse to order 20.
You’ll want the Texas Trash Pie and the Buttermilk Pie, and probably a backup of each for the car. Just do it.
The vibe is funky, warm, and filled with love, mismatched chairs, and servers who feel like they’ve known your kids since birth. You’ll walk in strangers. You’ll leave as family.
Whether you’re antiquing in the capital of cute, doing the drive between cities, or planning a very intentional detour — Royers is your spot.
It’s not just a meal. It’s...
Read moreWent on a Friday around 6pm. Don’t expect to be greeted upon entrance. At least we didn’t receive it. This is a small town place and the employees know who are the regulars and who is new to the restaurant. So when you enter of course you have all the customers staring you down but that’s okay. Ordered Tod’s pork tenderloin with creamed corn and mashed potatoes. I ordered Micah’s Salmon with creamed corn and mashed potatoes which was delicious. They brought us 3 rolls to start. Food was hot and delicious! My wife’s tenderloin was juicy and flavorful! We asked for more rolls and received a unhappy look. I was a little worried about tasting the creamed corn but that was my favorite dish. Went back on a Sunday around 11:30 a.m. walked in and of course the staff doesn’t notice you only the customers. After standing we decide to sit ourselves, finally someone comes to our table. We ordered the fried chicken with creamed corn and mashed potatoes. I was so excited to eat the corn and mashed potatoes since they were great days before. Food took a while. As we began to eat, the food was COLD. There’s nothing special about the fried chicken, just the hype in my opinion. Really cold! While we were eating, some Vietnamese ladies walked in, no one attended to them they stood there which made us uncomfortable for them. They finally sat after at least 10 minutes. Then they waited another 20 minutes for someone to come take their order and that only happened because they flagged someone down. I understand you have regulars but you would think they would be welcoming to visitors because those visitors are the ones that go back to their towns and talk about how great the restaurant was and refer people to go there. Blueberry lemon pie was excellent!!!! Loved that pie! Walked out happy the first time but extremely disappointed the...
Read moreDrove from Seguin to Round Top to have lunch at Royer's Cafe yesterday (Friday). The smell of home cooking as you enter was incredible - smelled like fresh baked bread (but I guess that was the mile high pies). We arrived at 11.45 and there were several tables available. It didn't take but 20 minutes for the place to fill up from there. The atmosphere was great, memorabilia covers the walls, ceiling and windows and it's quaint. The waitress (sorry I didn't catch her name) was very pleasant, and on point. We were able to order from either the lunch or dinner menu which was a great. Most places would just let you order from lunch menus at lunchtime. The prices were reasonable. The menus made me giggle as they had comical descriptions for some of the items. LOL
Hubby had a burger and fries and said it was the best, juiciest burger he's ever had. He loved the flavor (he wants the seasonings blend used). He said it had a flavor like no other burger. I had the grilled chicken salad. It was incredibly flavored, juicy, and they give you a lot. The chicken at most places is chopped into chunks and lightly sprinkled on the salad, but not here - here you get whole pieces of chicken (3). Can we talk about the fries! Fantastic! Crispy, tasty, not greasy in the least, and stayed crispy the entire meal! Unfortunately we did not leave room for pie but they looked delicious. Mile high pies and many of them! We will be trying those next time.
If you have not yet tried a meal at Royer's - you don't know what you're missing. Our compliments to the chef and kudos to the staff. We...
