Update* A Rutland area friend came to visit again and we decided to give it one more shot for loyalty sake. They must have been having an off day the last time. The GRINDER, while still not as good as I remember (still not sure the bread is the same/as good), it was a very good sandwich. I guess we are not finished with Gills yet. Waiting for our next VT visitor to brings us our fix. * Not the Gills I grew up with and loved. I have even gone so far as to have Gills imported whenever family/friends come to visit us in FL, or we go home to visit for the last 30 years. Last nights dinner was imported to us...cabbage missing on 2, and the 2 that did have cabbage, the cabbage was limp and bland, not the usual sweet and crisp. The bread has changed for the worse. No more crusty bread? If there was sandwich oil, the amount was so minimal as to be undetectable. It's just a regular "get anywhere" sub now, not a bad sandwich, but not a...
Read moreCalling in an order can take a long time. Last time, it took 20 minutes for someone to answer the phone. This time I tried for 30 minutes, and we gave up and ordered something else. It's like they have one phone and if you don't hit the timing right, you get a busy signal. The last time I did actually get to order sandwiches, the pickup time was 90 minutes for 4 sandwiches. Really? The sandwiches are not the best - kind of dry, the bread is just ok. Would give them 3 out of 5 on the sandwiches alone. Parking is not great. They put your sandwiches to wait over on a bench to pick up when you get there. They don't take credit cards - really, it's 2020. No online ordering. It's as if they haven't changed a thing since the 80's except their prices, and to be honest, I am fairly sure that's the case. Maybe this is a charming nostalgic Rutland deli for some, and especially those who love lots of cabbage, but I'm buying sandwiches elsewhere or making my own. Not...
Read moreSo I saw the reviews and needed a quick bite so I decided to try Gil's. I may be spoiled from coming from a town with a great sandwich shop but I have to say that the sandwiches at Gil's were literally tasteless. I ordered an Italian and my girlfriend a ham and cheese grinder. After a couple of bites we looked at each other and I said can you taste any flavor? She laughed and said no. I tasted her sandwich and it tasted exactly like mine which was suppose to have "hot meat". It was the oddest sensation to feel texture and chew but no taste. Above all that, the staff weren't friendly at all. The lady at the register asked me how much the sandwiches were and when I told her what we had ordered vs the actual price she yelled over to the sandwich maker and said "how much for their sandwiches". It was an odd...
