We were looking for a different Mexican restaurant, something with more character than our usual places. We certainly found it in Frankies! This place is small but the parking lot is packed, with everything from beaters to two 2014 Vettes. You can tell this place is a favorite before you get in the door.
When you make it past the line of people waiting, at 7:30PM on a Sunday, you can put your name down and expect a 20 min wait. Not too bad given how packed the place is already, plus you can wait at the bar and have a margarita. I had a Modelo Especial from the tap, and my girlfriend had a skinny margarita she loved.
Looking around you see some tequila bottles stuffed with christmas lights, creating a great atmosphere of your local dive bar. Wooden bar and walls complete this understated but effective decor. One of the high tops in the bar opened up so we grabbed that and took our name off the waiting list.
Service was quick, bringing chips and salsa. Salsa is good but nothing to write home about, same for the chips, but a bit too thick for my preference. Still, better than average and we get to enjoying them. The waiter was around often enough and brought us water and another round promptly.
It seemed like everyone was order some form of fajitas, carne asada or sliced steak and chicken. Not wanting to miss out on what appeared to be the specialty, we ordered the parrillada, a combination of steak, chicken, shrimp and sausage.
The meal came in a very reasonable amount of time, sizzling and smelling delicious. Because the dish was for two we also got two setups of rice, beans, guacamole and sour cream. We dove right in and savored each bite. It was certainly wonderful and easy to understand why it was the favorite dish. The steak was tender, the chicken was juicy. Shrimp wasn't anything to write home about but good, and the sausage was nice, no gristle.
All in all, it was reasonably priced, but not cheap. We really enjoyed ourselves here and will be back to try other dishes and their brunch....
Read moreWe drove by the place for years but the exterior leaves much to be desired so we never stopped in. The long lines we see on the weekends and the reviews here convinced us to stop in and try it. One thing ruined the meals for us. Apparently the default tortilla here is corn, not flour. Both my wife and I HATE corn tortilla's. We don't recall it mentioning on the menu which was used (the menu on their website don't say anything either) and our waitress definitely didn't ask what kind we wanted so I guess the default is corn and you have to ask for flour. My wife had the soft fajita tacos so could easily transfer to a flour tortilla. My enchilada's that was not possible so I just sucked it up and ate them. But even the chipotle sauce on top and the meats on the inside of the enchilada's were not very good. I had 2 shredded chicken and 1 beef. The chicken on my wife's fajita tacos were excellent. Salsa was good but as mentioned comes in too small of a bowl. They were quick to fill it up but it was just hard to get a chip into it. I'm not a bean eater but I usually get it anyway just to try it, and this was one of the better servings I've had. The queso was awesome and our waitress was on the spot with everything. I left feeling very disappointed in my food but I plan on coming back to try a...
Read moreFrankie's met all of the expectations we had going in. The food was just "fine", but there was nothing in particular that blew us away, it was just your average Tex-Mex in a "small town". The borracho beans were enjoyable, and were the most flavorful thing we had on the table. Unfortunately the queso left a lot to be desired, and was reminiscent of microwave white cheddar velveeta. The verde sauce on the enchiladas was strangely very sweet - too sweet. It felt like an attempt to make the verde sauce into a jam, a culinary experiment gone awry. The rice was rather bland, and the flour tortillas were far from homemade - just your basic store-bought tortillas packed with preservatives. The margarita wasn't anything special either, and would be what you'd expect if you were to dump some margarita mix into a slushie machine. All of this said, we did feel that the value for what you pay is fair. It isn't overly expensive and it's definitely higher quality than fast food. The food came out quickly - we were in and out in less than an hour, and the service is excellent. All of the servers seemed lovely and we observed many of them laughing and chatting with guests - this was really nice to see. This spot is popular, and it seems frequently busy - so clearly many enjoy it. It just wasn't a...
