I went there for the first time with someone else, but sadly and for surely, it will be the last. Everything went wrong, not to mention that we weren't greeted, no one said 'hi,' and we just sat down by ourselves at a table that we found. Apart from that, we were hoping to have some kalafen but they were out of it, which is okay. We ordered two large bowls of soup, one being khaopiak and the other Khaopoon. The khaopoon was not hot enough. It was lukewarm and the broth was very sweet, like that of a fruit juice. It contained a number of full fat meat and overall, it was extremely difficult to swallow. Therefore the khaopoon was abandoned part-way. On the other hand, the khaopiak was served with scrapped noodles that amounted to about a quarter cup. You wouldn't be able to call it 'noodles' because it looked more like little rice bits. The server did apologize on behalf of the chef, saying that she didn't understand why he took the leftover scraps and put it in a large bowl of soup for us---instead, should have just came out clean to tell us that they ran out of noodles. So basically, we felt wronged for being served leftover, end-of-the-day food, which explains how sloppy it was put together and how nasty it tasted.
We only paid for the khaopoon. The server took the khaopiak off of our tab after seeing how ridiculously it was arranged.
I also want to add that everyone's experience may vary AND each experience may be different, however, this one time was enough for us to conclude that we will never come back to The Spot. Overall, we are disappointed by the restaurant's ethics in serving quality...
Read moreI ordered take out; papaya salad and Kapoon. I used to enjoy coming here when it was new because of the papaya salad. It had the right amount of spice, sweet, sour and funk. Delicious then. I just happened to be in the area and ordered Papaya and kapoon, because of old memories. I don’t know what happened, but both papaya and kapoon were very sweet. The taste of the papaya and kapoon had overwhelming cane sugar and pale in flavors of fermented funky padek to the point that I couldn’t finish beyond several bites. Disgusting. I felt like I gained a few cavities afterward. I might as well as eaten a handful of candy corn because that’s exactly how sweet it was. I had my 9 yr old tried the kapoon and she adamantly rejected and said IT’S too Sweet. She didn’t want it. We threw it out. I kind of want my money back. But I don’t ever want to step foot in that establishment again. They have lost a customer. I will not recommend this this to anyone. Horrible food. Shouldn’t even call it Lao Restaurant at this point because Lao food is known for padek not overly sweet sauce or dish. They gave Lao restaurant a bad name. This isn’t Lao food! Maybe this family own restaurant isn’t actually run by a lao family, because this wouldnt have pass the Lao dish...
Read moreOkay, maybe more like 3.5, but i'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I was really looking forward to this place after my friend told me we were gonna stop by there on the way back from Snowboarding in Tahoe. The two hour drive only built the anticipation even more. Looks like a sports bar from the outside, but more like asian noodle inside with a bar and tvs, so not your typical sports bar.
We got the Papaya Salad and Laos sauasage to split, and each ordered our own KaSoy:
The papaya salad was on point! 3 peppers had a kick to it, although a little too much to handle for some of my friends. The only think missing was little bits of preserved crabs. Flavor was good and left you wanting more.
The Laos Sausage was good, being juicy and soft inside and a crispy skin on the outside. Again seasoned well, if not slightly on the lighter side. The sauce it came with was interesting...
The KaSoy was supposed to be the highlight for me, but some how left me feeling that it was missing some thing. The ingredients were fresh and well portioned. The meatballs were excellent. However, the broth was too light and flat. I felt like it was missing something.
I would go back for the Papaya Salad, but i'll have to think about ordering the...
