Decided to try Bun bo hue. Never had it, know it was out there for ages since the 2000's, in Saint paul. Restaurants was beginning to close, didn't want to hop into this restaurant but it was the closest one. Been to Tay Ho before in the past, 1-2 times (about 10years ago, around there) for pho. Wasn't impressed, broth had no flavor, hardly any meat, so never went back! But Decided to go this time to TAY HO and try Bun bo hue! It was the last hour, still a few people in the restaurant. On the menu, there wasn't prices for sizes on the dish. I asked the lady, she looks like and act like part of the family. She said they had small, large, and extra large. She pionted out and showed me the bowls in sizes from customers there. I told her I will be taking a large. She suggested an extra large because it's only a dollar more. I said I won't be able to finish an extra large. She said the large is $14.95, the extra large is only $1 dollar more. I told her that's fine, a large is what I want. After I ate, went to pay, she added and charges me a miscellaneous item $3.95 on my transaction. I asked her what is this. I saw by her facial expression (she paused and was stupid stuck for a couple of seconds), she messed up. I should've let her explain but, I was thinking of the price difference of the sizes and said , is it because the size. She said yes (I don't think so). I paid and also added a $3 tip to it making the total $22 dollars and some change! $19 for a Large bowl but, the price for the bowl ( large, $14 something) and another price as miscellaneous item ($3.95) huh...? If this restaurant is this sketchy, and money hungry to charge a miscellaneous item thinking they can get away with it! The heck with them! Their pho was nasty last time, and now this! You can keep that extra $4, seems to me like you need it more than I do! ....Poor service with an attitude and a thief of a restaurant!!! There's other restaurants out there! I wasn't going to comment but, I just couldn't get it off my mind! You don't like to be cheated. I don't like to be cheated also! Karma will bite them back!!!! the heck with this sketchy place!!! I will not be returning! This part is re-edited... looked at some of the other reviews and re-edited this... SEEMS LIKE OTHERS HAD THIS RESTAURANT CHEATED THEM OUT OF MONEY ALSO!!!!! I'm gonna have the food, safety, and heath inspector pay them a...
Read moreWe came with mixed expectations; we read the reviews here before we arrived and expected good food in a dumpy setting.
We were pleasantly surprised when we entered and found the restaurant to be quite clean and well maintained. There were already several customers seated and the atmosphere was light and welcoming.
We were told to sit where we wanted, so we chose a corner spot (unfortunately right under the TV...) and took a look at the menu. I settled on the Seafood Pho, while my wife went for the Mock Duck Lo Mein. Hers was a dinner special, so it came with Cream Cheese Wontons and Fried Rice.
Our food came very quickly, even more so as we enjoyed Jasmine tea and talked about the day in the surprisingly quiet and peaceful little corner (again, the only minor annoyance the TV).
I enjoyed the Pho quite a lot. The broth had lots of flavor and the noodles were just the right texture. There were plenty of each of the Seafood pieces and veggies, such that my wife and I were satisfied sharing the dishes. The basil and bean sprouts were fresh and clean. We both agreed that it was a great bowl of soup.
My wife's dish all came on the same plate - rice on one side with the Wontons on the side, and the Lo Mein on the other side. We dug in to the Lo Mein first, eager to see how the Mock Duck had turned out. We were happy with the texture and flavor, and once again felt there was enough of a balance of ingredients. The rice was also quite enjoyable, and near the end of the dish, the two mixed to create a nice little blend of flavors that we picked through with our chopsticks as we talked.
Overall, we really enjoyed our meal. The price was right, the portions were generous, and the location was also quite pleasant. If you are looking for a low-key meal for a good price, Tay Ho is worth...
Read moreHad a really bad experience today. The service there was terribly horrible. Our waitress was a disaster. Her name was Carolyn. 1st, I asked for a tri color with extra mung beans. It came without any mung beans, not a single seed. I decided to just eat it and didn't complain. 2nd, she brought out an order of eggrolls. We wasn't sure if it comes with my platter or if it was a mistake. So my husband asked. Carolyn just grabbed the plate and walked away while my husband was still talking to her. It turned out to be for the customer behind us. 3rd, she took the wrong order for one of my dishes. I specifically stated that I wanted the shrimp with mixed vegetables (C45), and they brought out the sweet and sour shrimp (C44). When I refused the order, Carolyn came and gave us an attitude. She didn't own up to her mistake, but was trying to pin it on me. She was talking over me and was raising her voice. Our entire time there, she did not spit out a single apology. When the remake finally came, I smiled and said, "thank you" to Lan (the owner's daughter-in-law). She didn't reply and just walked away. Beware if you are planning to dine here. Employees are very rude and disrespectful. The owner's daughter-in-law didn't handle the situation appropriately. Instead, she was trying to defend the waitress that it was a "human mistake" and that's how she is. Yes we make mistakes, but not when it's 3 mistakes all to one customer in less than an hour. If that's how she is, then get a replacement. WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS RESTAURANT AGAIN! Will not recommend this to any friends or...
