Edit/Update: We've been back more often than we expected, something or the right combination of somethings brings us back. The weekly rotations have been good with things like bulgogi beef bowls and braised lamb benedict. The cinnamon rolls are as good as we suspected and we highly recommend trying them. We've bought some extra to go for people to try a couple times. As we mentioned before you can try to keep the total price reasonable, sticking to an entree each should keep you just under $20 a person but that's rather tough to do with beverages and all the extra stuff available so expect to spend $55+ for two. Other things to note, it does get busy on weekends and if you're getting a to go order we recommend double checking it yourself before leaving. Original: A good quality, little breakfast place with some deli/grocery items available. The take home stuff is very good as well as the weekly rotations. The normal menu is much more average but there are still some standouts like the pancakes. As a heads up there is a clearly stated 20% liveable wage surcharge and may not entirely go to the staff. It is unfortunate that applies to take out and togo grocery/baked items as well though, and it would be better if the 20% was part of the prices listed. We had the huevos rancheros breakfast and the pig's eye breakfast. The rancheros was good but next time I'd try the biscuits and gravy meal or pancake meal instead of the pig's eye. The ham tasted really good, but was a bit hard to cut apart. Some of the hash browns were burnt, and a few blueberries had gone bad but still made it on the plate. We got a single side pancake to try and the maple bacon butter really adds a nice touch. Get there early if you want some of their drinks or bread loaves to go. Cinnamon rolls looked great as well, things were pretty picked over and out by 1pm. Unfortunately it is pricey by the end of things, it is pretty easy to rack up a bill over $40 without even hitting the take home stuff but it's a nice breakfast treat. As it was we ended up around $66 after the 20%. You can keep things pretty reasonable if you just grab a loaf/slice of bread or cinnamon roll on your way past though. While not often, we do plan to visit again. Most likely for some take out options.

Came here for a mid-morning breakfast for something new to try. The caramel/ cinnamon rolls are OH SO GOOD. One of the best I've had in the area for some time. Our main breakfast dish was something out of the ordinary. I totally forgot to snap a photo & can't remember what it was called. Something with braised roast beef, provolone cheesy hashbrowns & topped with an egg. Never had roast beef for breakfast, and my brain still can't wrap my taste buds to think differently. Was definitely good - especially the hashbrowns. No real specialty coffee menu unless I completely missed it & the black coffee was nothing extra special either. If I were to go back, it would be for the caramel/ cinnamon roll. Overall, was one person's breakfast all worth the $45 tab? No, not so much. The atmosphere is nice with lots of seating & a few spots outside as well. You get in line to order & get a table number stand. The server who delivered the meal was really upbeat, friendly, and accommodating. The place was busy when I arrived at 9am and really started to fill up a half hour later. I'd say be prepared to stand in line during normal busy times.

Stopped in on a Saturday morning for a breakfast. Was able to walk in and get a table and did not have a hard time getting in Picked this location as was first on a reccomended spots in St.Paul for breakfast. I ordered the Buttered Tin Hash as felt having a meal with name in the title would be outstanding. The steak was covered in gristle and tasted very over done and overtook the taste of all other ingredients. The hash browns were under cooked and veggies were cold. The tortillas were the best part of the meal. Received tortillas enough to make 3 small tacos, I loaded them with hot sauce and was able to eat the meal. My partner ordered the Biscuits ane Gravy. Her meal was served cold and was pretty bland in taste. The biscuits were very very dense and did not absorb any gravy. The desserts were okay as well, I would skip the whoopie cookies as they are very plain. Cheesecake brownie is worth a try might be served better cold. The banana bread though was to die for. The banana bread was worth the purchase and will comeback sometime for it. Was not enough to save the meal but was a worthy palate cleanser.

Average in every rubric I’m rating The Buttered Tin as average, which in no way is intended as negative, is just that to me, feels like one more breakfast spot as surely are many. Maybe there are baked or specialty items in the menu that qualify as hidden gems, but for a one-time visitor, neither the coffee, the pancakes, nor the salmon wrap, reached the memorable sweet spot however tasty they were. Would I recommend this place??? Well, if you happen to be around, yes!!! Nevertheless, if you’re planning on deviating from your route or schedule for coming to this place, maybe it’s not worth the bother. Anyhow, probably what really ground my gears was the sign letting customers know The Buttered Tin would no longer accept tips in lieu of a 20% surcharge. From a wheelchair user standpoint, I’m no fan of those places where you are forced to tip (because that’s what the surcharge is) for queuing and ordering first, and then having to find a table while carrying your coffee with nobody even caring to assist.

This place was cute and the food wasn’t too bad. We paid about $75, got the banana foster french toast, and an Irish crème liqueur coffee, a caramel latte, and pancakes with bacon, a blueberry hand pie, and 2 peanut butter cookies to go. For $75 I expected the food to be a bit better. It was nice to not have to wait to pay afterwards since you pay up front, however we weren’t checked in on by service staff until they came to grab our plates after we were done eating. Blueberry hand pie was a good snack before our food. Could’ve used more syrup with the pancakes. Which isn’t too much of a complaint; those pancakes soaked up a lot of syrup! The bacon maple syrup was good too. Banana foster french toast was good, but definitely wasn’t a dish to take home as the dish quickly got soggy. The whipped cream on top came melted. When waiting on food, my partner saw a service staff grab for something over a plate and her bracelet slipped over a pile of whipped cream that was then served to a customer.

Super impressed with the Buttered Tin after my first time here—it lived up to the hype! The delicious breakfast set us up for a wonderful day. I highly recommend the cinnamon roll; they’ve got the ooey gooey, fluffy, and chewy texture down to a science, and it still feels homemade. The Damn Good Breakfast Sandwich was also delicious—simple, but very well-executed. The breakfast burrito was huge, so be prepared if you order that. Service was friendly and quick! Overall, the atmosphere was cozy and memorable. The option to sit outside in the shade in Lowertown was very enjoyable on a Sunday morning in June. Based on aroma and what they had on display, it seems baked goods are their strong suit. Can’t wait to be back to try more of the menu, especially the lunch items like the pot roast sandwich. It actually wasn’t too busy when we went around 1pm: about a 5 minute wait in line to order. Please do yourself a favor and give The Buttered Tin a try if you’re considering!
