Gateway Subs — Restaurant in Saint Petersburg

This place is the go to sub shop if you're in St. Petersburg. I didn't know I was going to become so attached to this establishment when I first tried their sandwiches. Now that I've been here dozens of times, I can confidently say that no other sandwich shop can match their subs bite for bite. The staff at all the locations I've been to have been very helpful, nice and friendly. Always a clean inside to their stores. Their deli meats are delicious and always fresh, sliced right in front of you to order. Their sandwich choices range from simple single meat, create your own option sandwiches to unique and delicious meat combinations like pepperoni and Buffalo chicken together. There's also special limited time subs they offer as their "sub of the month" special. They also offer a very unique variety of sauces and dressings for your sub and even make their own teas! I recommend the juicy tree climber, the funny you should ask, or the E-Z choice. There's even a small breakfast menu if you find yourself here in the morning time! I've been to all three of their St Pete locations but frequent the 4th street location since it's close to home. On the bright side, the sub was amazing. Very fresh and loved the bread. However, the environment is awful, to the point I won't return. Initial impression, the front is so boring I thought it might actually be closed. Inside, It's messy and felt dirty. In the kitchen area, there are boxes and all sorts of crap piled all over the place, looks like a hot damn mess. The huge solid plastic window between the customer and employee Is entirely unnecessary and creates a very impersonal, cold feel. The floor is nasty. It could be a cool modern-industrial look if you'd remove the dirty white floor paint and do a rough finish and seal off the concrete. The seating area in the way back is a windowless dingy white-wall cave with a couple of team sport flags on the wall. There are plenty of inexpensive things they could do to get it organized and cleaned up and make it feel inviting. Bro, surely you have a female or gay friend with some design sense who could help you out! Your subs are way too good to be in such a crap...

Honestly the food is great. I’ve gone 2 days in a row. Ultimate Italian is dope.

My issue is that they told me they prefer if customers order online, but today when I went to pick it up they had a long line of customers and essentially were ignoring the online tickets.

I showed up 20 minutes after ordering and waited another 20 minutes to get my food. It would have been faster to wait in the line and order than it was to order ahead. They did hook me up with some cookies since I had to wait, which was an appreciated gesture.

The core issue is they need to set up their Uber Eats account to notify the user when their food is actually ready. Right now it automatically tells you it’s ready 4 minutes after ordering, you head there, and they won’t have started it yet.
