Johnny's Bar & Grill — Restaurant in Salem

Stopped in at Johnny's for a post eclipse lunch on a fluke while we waited for the first wave of traffic to wane.

The wait staff was nice and prompt without being pushy, the menu prices were reasonable with rotating daily specials. The couple behind us were raving about how good their breakfast was. We ordered burgers, I had the Jack Daniels barbecue burger with side salad, my wife had a cheeseburger deluxe with house fries. We both drank water because of God only knows what the traffic would be like going back to Portland.

My burger was a big messy delight topped with two onion rings, JD barbecue sauce, lettuce, tomato and pickle on a toasted bun. Side salad had arugula, romaine, tomato, red onion and cucumber and was good, although it was topped with a healthy serving of black olives? My wife said her cheeseburger was perfect and the house fries were the best she had eaten in some time. She said two thumbs up for both!

The best description for this place is "neighborhood bar," and that's a good thing. Clean and friendly with good food, a well equipped bar and several taps of microbrews plus standard draft beers all at reasonable prices and a few big screen TVs. Tried to eat at Johnny's Bar & Grill this morning and the service was so bad! It took them 10 minutes to bring us menus and ask if we wanted anything to drink. During this time I watched the gal behind the bar wipe out her eye boogers and repeatedly touch and rub her eyes after that while chatting and laughing with her co-worker. She came with our water and asked if we were ready to order. We needed a few minutes and told her we were almost ready. We made our decision and put our menus down. I looked up and saw our "server" heading out for a cigarette. We waited for quite awhile for her to return and when she did she came over to the table next to us, gave them their menus, took their drink order and walked away. Searching for good food later in the evening and y was challenging. Didn't want the greasy bar food and burnt out of Mexican. But saw an ad for Johnny's bar and grill and decided to give it a shot after reading some good reviews. Large menu and I was shocked!! They had fried breaded salmon!! It's very difficult to find even at the coast. I had to try it. And i was not at all disappointed! It was amazing. The panko breading was perfectly. The fish as well as homemade fries were no way greasy. The Coleslaw was of the vinegar style and I dislike it but that's personal tastes. It all looked fabulous.
