We were coming back from Pruski's Market in Adkins and looking for BBQ for lunch. I had heard good things about BBQLife by Chris so we gave it a try. It's really small and easy to miss on WW White close to 410. Look for an old drive in restaurant and you will find it. No indoor seating, but they do have a few seats outdoors. It looked like during the time we were there that most order to go. We ate at one of the tables outside because it was a nice cool, sunny day.
We were greeted by an enthusiastic young man and asked a few questions about the menu. For this visit we got the brisket, pulled pork, sausage, potato salad, and green beans. Brisket is lean, moist, and tender with a little smoke taste. Not much of a smoke ring here. I was left wanting for more bark. It's like I'm wondering if the pitmaster cut off the burnt ends for himself or thought the customers would not want them. Pulled pork is tender and flavorful, but is also missing much bark. I learned to make Memphis style pulled pork from the pitmasters where they pull it from the large piece of meat and that helps preserve the bark and serve immediately to their customers. It seems most Texas restaurants pull it and put in in a steam table tray where it sits for hours losing that bark feature. The sausage is from Yoakum, Texas and it was excellent. Flavorful and juicy. I liked the potato salad, but the wife said it was too sweet. Potato salad is one of those sides that are made so many ways that you will never please everyone. The BBQ sauce is good, a little sweet. The green beans were just "okay." Canned green beans cooked with salt and pepper. I would challenge the chef to add bacon or some burnt ends from the brisket to give more flavor.
My wife needed to use the restroom so they had to find the right key. She says it's only a restroom you use if you have to really go bad.
I just realized after looking at photos from other reviewers that we did not get pickles and onions.
In summary, BBQ LIfe is good, but not the best in San Antonio. With a little work they could be in the Top 5. I focus on the BBQ and don't deduct points if someone is a food truck or to go...
Read moreFirst time here, and listen to others when they say you might drive past it, cuz I did. Located in an old drive inn, there's no seating inside, other than where you order and wait. The smell was amazing as I approached the door... only to be met by a really loud tv set blaring with the Drew Barrymore Show in a small waiting area 🙄 it was really annoying. It didn't seem to faze the young girl behind the counter that the older gentleman she was talking to kept putting his hand up to his ear to hear her... The menu is pretty varied, but nothing too fancy, which is a relief nowadays. Decided I'd try 3 meat plate and go with the young lady's suggestion of potato salad and baked beans - they were out of mac n cheese by 2pm 😕 I don't understand the longer than usual wait,, but it did take at least 10-15min after ordering to get my order. The girl would disappear to the back after every order leaving people walking in asking me if anybody is working... then appear again. But for all that, it seems they've got steady walk-ins and phone ahead business. Just something you've got to get used to I guess or plan around. I do have to say, IT WAS WELL WORTH THE WAIT. The brisket was moist, juicy, and had a nice little fat cap that was rendered just right - I don't mind moist or lean, but if you have a preference let them know as they didn't ask. The pork ribs had a great taste and were flling off the bone. The sausage was the only thing that was not noteworthy. I prefer a coarser texture but it was just sausage. All in all, HEFTY PORTIONS OF MEAT are served here: 2 links, abt 3 pork ribs and 3.5 thick slices of brisket. 🔥👍 The potato salad was a'ight, but the baked beans were hot and tangy, not too sweet! Everything, including drink came out to $23 which is a great bargain! I'd like to come back again to try habanero rib tips, which they were out of, and mac n cheese, and more. It was a lovely day outside so I didn't mind the outdoor seating. Will definitely save it on my map, as I'm in the area occasionally. And who knows..I just may become a fan of talk...
Read moreAmazing! Had the 3 meat plate with green beans and Mac n cheese.
Driving to this establishment, you can smell the bbq a good amount of blocks away.
The marbled brisket is extremely tender and moist. The dry rub is packed with flavors. You don't need a bbq sauce to eat it. That's how good it is.
Of course, I did give the sauce a try and it is really good. It's not too sweet or obnoxious like others I have tried. It actually compliments and some how draws out the flavors of the brisket.
Sausage is delicious and has that snap to it with each bite. It is bursting with juices and once again perfect amount of flavor.
Ribs are the fall off the bone type. With that said... yes they are tender but once it falls off the bone the rib meat still holds together. It doesn't turn to shredded mush. The rub is powerful and gives it a nice smokey/pepper flavor.
Sides: green beans are canned version, which I have no problem with them. Mac n cheese is homemade and pretty good. It is kind of a little too rich for me with all the cheese but that's what Mac n cheese is supposed to be. Mine didn't have any crispy edges in it... so all of it was a tender noodle.
The quantity of food is spectacular. I hope the amount of food never changes! You can save some for later or share.
My hubby and I ended up ordering 3 of those 3 meat plates haha. The other sides eaten were the ranch beans and potato salad.
The ranch beans are canned but they are good..
Potato salad is homemade and delicious.
Plate price is $22.00 plus tax. A well worth it in my book!
The beautiful young lady who took our order was very welcoming and friendly. Definitely a must try establishment! Thank you for the...
