Through no fault of our own we missed the invitation only soft opening of FCG Alamo Heights. Finally able to avail ourselves of what we knew would turn out to be Neptune's favorite fish purveyor, we entered the new restaurant still scented with "that new car smell". It's a very visually pleasing restaurant with plenty of indirect light pouring in through the estate size, plate glass windows in front having as much square footage as 1/4 of the restaurant floor space. It was cheery, bright and made me feel happy to be there.
We were happier still once greeted by our absolute favorite chef and resterateur, Mr. Rocky Cheek, who set about taking care of us like family along with a talented server we had had before, Nick.
As we were considering our menu choice, Rocky paused at our table to ask if we liked whiskey. I could see that mischievous glint in his eye that I had noticed once before when he proudly delivered a shot of super premium tequila for us to try. This time it was a short blast of whiskey that had been flavored in- house with real candy corn. That's a trick-or-treat goody better than any all day sucker or caramel popcorn ball I ever received after scouring the neighborhood collecting a bag full of treats on Halloween.
A cold Kona beer and a top shelf margarita did the bartenders proud, but the fresh, cold gulf oysters shivering in their bed of ice shocked us for both size and incomparable, fresh elastic meatiness. All I could think of was that well known soccer announcer's word as the favored team prevailed with winning points as they scored, "G-o-o-o-o-a-l"! Just look at the size of the pictured oysters! Also, I suppose I am partial to our gulf coast bivalves over most other geographical origins.
Not wanting to move on from that cornucopia of oyster goodness, we sat savoring the satiety of that non-pariel appetizer. But post haste a fat fillet of alabaster hued flounder appeared with a complement of chunky crab meat stuffing and a buerre blanc sauce with tangy capers that immediately seized our gaze as we in turn immediately seized our forks. The mildest of fish flavor, no doubt attesting to its freshness, was further imperialized by the type of sauce that, you know the paraphrase, would make a man hole cover taste good. This is probably our favorite dish.
The only complaint we have is that now we will have to drive over to Nacogdoches to get our dose of Rocky Cheek and, of course, the seafood goodies emanating from the kitchen there (though the closer South Rim location will probably find us continuing patronage as well).
Muchas Gracias, Rocky Cheek, for your unbounded...
Read moreDelicious! I'm so happy about Fish City Grill opening a new location in Alamo Heights. We sat at the bar and enjoyed watching the staff shucking oysters. The food is excellent. We started with a half dozen oysters ( Moon Shoal) from the East Coast. They were excellent. I should have ordered a full dozen. They have a featured menu they change out. I had the Coconut Crusted Rainbow Trout with broccoli and white rice. It was very, very good. The fish was cooked perfectly. The broccoli was a little soft for my taste, but very flavorful. We also had the Fish & Chips which did not disappoint. Shout out to Jordan for making excellent cocktails. We had A Grand Patron Margarita, which was good, but we decided to substitute Lalo Tequila on the next round, and it was even better. We also had a Twisted Citrus Martini. It was good, but very tart. And a Rest Ashore which was delicious (not too sweet, not too strong). The atmosphere was good as well with a mixture of booths, tables, bar seating and a nice outdoor patio with misters and fans. Overall this is an excellent place and we will be adding to...
Read moreFish City Grill is a solid option for a chain restaurant, and we've generally had good experiences there. The atmosphere is casual and the service is reliable, making it a comfortable spot for a casual meal out.
To start, we ordered the Fried Dill Pickles, which were fantastic—crispy, tangy, and a great way to kick off the meal.
For our entrées, the grilled Mediterranean Branzino was unfortunately disappointing. While the fish itself was flaky and perfectly seasoned, it was smothered in a creamy olive pesto that completely overwhelmed the delicate flavor of the fish. The pesto became the dominant flavor profile, making it a dish we would not order again.
We also tried the Fish & Chips, which were a letdown. The fish was undercooked, and the batter was still runny, rendering about half the dish inedible. It was far too greasy to enjoy.
Overall, while the atmosphere and service are great, our recent experience with the main dishes was mixed. We’d recommend trying other items on the menu and perhaps steering clear of the fried dishes...
