It just shows to go ya that sometimes you just need to ignore all the negativity and derogatory comments made about a restaurant and try it yourself. In this case, I think all the grousing I read concerning this place might be attributed to disgruntled employees or maybe folks that were incensed about not being able to pronounce the name of this taqueria.
Sunday found us looking for some nearby locale that was still serving breakfast late as it was after 2:00 pm. Yep. Sometimes it just takes us that long to get a move on after a late Sat. nite. We would have even accepted tacos from Taco Cabana, but they stop selling breakfast tacos at 11:00 am, if they are even open on the Sabbath, as do most non-taqueria type taco vendors.
I remembered this funky, chalky-dark yellow/orange-cheese colored taqueria that I have passed by a hundred times like we all do on familiar routes, but have never stopped in. They were open yet for another hour so away we went looking to fill a to-go order that would provide sustenance for the day and some reheats during the week.
With the colored plastic seats and spartan no-frills appearance, the place could have been a Dairy Queen but for the Mexican food menu. Our order for 9 tacos was filled with ingredients still fresh from the flat top and bubbling pots. The eggs were fresh, the beans had flavor, the bacon did not taste like the cheapest you could buy, the picadillo was different, but still good with onion and carrot slivers, a departure from the ubiquitous diced potato and the carne g. had no rubbery chewers with tender meat hunks and a decent tasting gravy. Nothing wrong with the homemade black blistered flour tortillas either that were no worse for the steam bath when filled and rolled in foil to keep them warm.
All in all the service was friendly and the tacos were filled with what you would expect for a reasonable $1.85 per. Application of both green and red salsas found favor with my palate too; neither overly cantankerous when poured over eggs or beans, etc.
I have never worked at this place and can pronounce the name so I guess I have nothing but positive things to say. The inexpensive lunch plates may even draw me back for a midday sampling of their Mexican...
Read moreThe reason I gv it a 2 stars is Becuz Lisa at window she was so nice. I told her this ws my 1 st time, hoping they wld hook it up! But 1st they did not have fajita ranchera my fav, so I got closest thing Carne Mexicana taco that was so overcooked the asada meat was crunchy , so in case I did not like it I also got a plain fajita. I don't eat much so I had to put my fajita in fridge till later. When I opened it later on they had put cilantro in bottom of foil then my taco on top. Whn I opened it there was this green wet slime that had ruined my whole taco, had to throw in trash WTH who puts cilantro on freaking fajitas. Then 1.50 ea. flauta 4 of them and a steak Tampico plate my hubby wanted, they charged me extra for sour cream for his flautas. He got a steak 1 enchilada beans rice right at $9.00 so they are not cheap. The flautas were chicken fajitas that were dried out and recooked them in a corn tortilla, no chz or flavor. Wasted $ on those too. threw them in trash, he ate the plate, but nothing special edible basically. We will not be back , $25.00 wasted I try to read reviews b4 I go somewhere, so those of u who think this is good Mexican food, I expect u think Taco cabana is also good,...
Read morePlaced an order this past Saturday, got home and realized I got a completely different order. I called and spoke with one of the workers over the phone and explained the situation. She told me to come by the following Monday and took down my name and number.
I arrived Monday and explained the situation to the person at the window. After waiting 15 minutes, she told me she called everyone who works at the restaurant and no one apparently remembered my wrong order or my information. She told me she also spoke with the manager, who apparently said nothing could be done. She then told me to come by in the morning. I asked her what good that would do me, and she could not clarify. All she could apparently do was to tell me how oh so sorry she was.
I do not recommend this restaurant. It's one thing to get an order wrong, it's something entirely different to waste a customer's time only to tell them nothing can be done, despite them being the ones who made the error.
Go to any other taqueria, trust me, there's...
