I got the impression while dining that Chef Arriola has bigger plans than a simple soup and sandwich shop. The entire restaurant gave indications that it desired to be something more: the menu features a daily plate special that is a far cry from soup or salad. The market aspect - featuring a handful of gourmet food items and across a couple of racks that serve more to direct traffic than anything else - too, seemed out of place.
The bulk of the menu consisted of sandwiches, and I opted for an Ahi tuna salad. The sandwich was not unlike a typical tuna salad, but the big, fresh chunks of tuna made it above average. The fresh ciabatta roll was nice, too, though I was perplexed at the observation that there appeared to be marks from a panini press on the top of the roll, yet it was cold.
I thought the menu items only came with the sandwich, so I grabbed a bag of chips to go with the meal, only to find that the sandwich came with a small amount of freshly-made chips. While always better than the bagged kind, these appeared as if they were roasted or grilled BEFORE they were fried, which was an interesting take, but didn't really make it any better than a typical freshly-made chip. Still very good.
While the sandwich was better than average, I got the impression that the better menu items are in the pasta salads or the daily specials, and hopefully, Chef Arriola will open a restaurant that will be better able to accompany everything he wants to do. Until then, SoGo is a too-big-for-its-britches sandwich shop that makes some...
Read moreImportant note, this is a Korean and Japanese restaurant, not just a Sushi restaurant. The name can be misleading or make some think they only serve sushi.
Came for dinner on a Saturday evening and it was not crowded, so was immediately seated. Olivia immediately came over for drink and appetizer orders. She did a great job throughout the evening. For the appetizer, ordered the Tornado Potato, Tempura Sampler. Mussels, and Yellow Tail sushi. Food was brought out as they were ready, so ranged between 5 and minutes for all. Everything was good, but my favorite was the simplest dish of the Tornado Potato. Had a nice crisp and went with the salt only flavoring. Sushi was a nice cut of fresh yellow tail. The Tempura Sampler had a few undercooked items that left the vegetables a little hard. The mussels were good, but the toppings overpowered the mussels flavor.
For the meal, ordered the Galbi-Tang and Spicy Squid. Both of these dishes were very good. I slightly preferred the soup, but both were good. Galbi-Tang contained large chunks of short ribs and the broth was perfect. The Spicy Squid had good sized pieces of squid in a spicy base mixed with other vegetables.
For dessert, finished with the banana tempura which was bananas fried in tempura batter drizzled with a fruit puree and chocolate sauce served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It wasn't too heavy or too sweet.
Overall, good Korean food with some Japanese dishes and...
Read moreSo I was very excited to try a new sushi place, especially one that was close to my house. I was very disappointed with this restaurant. First off it is very small inside, and seating is limited, but we were sat quickly. It was EXTREMELY hot inside the restaurant. They had a fan towards the front to help, but it was very uncomfortable. The waitress also was not friendly. The restaurant was busy, and I believe there were only two servers, so our waitress has several tables. With that being said, I do not feel that it should affect the level of service patrons receive. I asked questions about menu items and felt very rushed to order even when we asked for more time. We ordered Gyoza as an appetizer and two sushi rolls. The Gyoza came out quick, but she did not bring us any plates and did not come back to check on us, so we were left trying to eat our appetizer off the serving dish. After failing to get her attention to request plates, I gave up. The sushi took a very long time to come out. She said it was due to them having a new chef, but still, it was a very long wait. When our order did come out, It was nothing special in my opinion. I have had better sushi rolls, and quite frankly it was not worth the hot environment or poor we endured. This could have just been a bad night to try this restaurant out, but considering there are several other sushi restaurants in the area, I do not foresee...
