The Great Greek Mediterranean Grill in San Antonio, TX, is an absolute gem. The staff and owner are friendly, courteous, and genuinely customer-focused. You can tell they take pride in their work, and it shows. The cooking staff, visible through the service window, were all smiles, clearly enjoying what they do, and it translated into the absolutely amazing food they serve.
I started with "The Great Greek Plate," which could easily feed two people. The beef and lamb gyro meat had a perfect crust, was cut thick, and remained incredibly juicy. The tzatziki sauce was rich and refreshing, while the pickled red onion added a vibrant and satisfying crunch. The side salad was massive, brimming with fresh cucumbers, pickled onions, feta, and a delicious vinaigrette dressing. I haven't tasted Greek food this good since I left Germany 18 years ago.
My wife ordered "The Great Greek Gyro," which was another meal that could serve two, making it well worth the price. The fresh vegetables, feta, and tzatziki sauce were expertly combined with perfectly sliced beef and lamb gyro meat. The pita was light and fluffy, yet sturdy enough to hold the gyro together effortlessly.
We also got the hummus appetizer, which was the perfect size for two. It came with two pitas, sliced into 16 wedges. The hummus was topped with chickpeas, spices, and a drizzle of EVOO. It was light, refreshing, and had a mellow taste, making it an ideal starter without overwhelming your taste buds.
For dessert, we had the baklava, and let me tell you, it was the best baklava my wife and I have ever had. It was light, fluffy, and crispy without drying out your mouth like some places. The filling was rich, creamy, and had just the right amount of crunch—truly mind-blowing.
While we were eating, the owner approached us to ask how we were enjoying our meal. We immediately told him that his restaurant was hands down our favorite Greek spot in the States. We mentioned our plans to come back and try more of the menu, and at that point, he asked if we were planning on getting dessert. We told him we had ordered baklava, and he insisted we also try the baklava ice cream and Mom's rice pudding. Though we initially said we’d save them for next time, he generously brought us a sample of each to try.
I’m a big fan of rice pudding and arroz con leche, so I had high expectations for Mom's rice pudding, and it did not disappoint. While tasting the new desserts, the owner mentioned that the baklava is made in-house from scratch, and it’s used in the baklava ice cream, which is also made with freshly churned vanilla ice cream. To say the ice cream was delectable and decadent would be an understatement.
We will definitely be coming back, and we’ll be bringing all our friends and family here when they visit. This place is truly a standout, and I can’t...

Read moreThis spot opened 2 weeks ago and has a ton of potential. We had lunch there today and tried the beef/lamb gyro combos with side salad and feta fries and the beef tenderloin souvlaki plate. Almost all of it was amazing in taste and very fresh! The only gap was the souvlaki. For almost $20, the beef tenderloin kabobs were not cooked to our requested medium rare and were medium well to well done and chewy, tough, freezer tasting, and dry. Kudos to Anina for putting in a do over to quickly make it right (girl should be running the place with her attentiveness and professionalism!) but the male manager on staff jumped in and invalidated my feedback and assured me the meat was good, high quality, fresh and made per order trying to invalidate my input and experience. Don’t tell me, bro, show me! Side note, we rarely send food back and eat out a lot. It has to be really bad for us to do so. Still, he agreed to remake it and while it was again overcooked it tasted better and cleaner than the first batch which we appreciated hence the stars. This would have been five stars if not for the combativeness of the manager. In the spirit of feedback, they should not offer different cooking levels of doneness and just cook it the one way they know to keep it simple so expectations can be managed. I see other reviewers on here experienced similar tough beef kabobs with their visits. I’d still go back because the gyro, salad, and feta fries were amazing…and Miss Anina! I wish these folks the...
