I absolutely LOVE pie! And I have wonderful memories of going down to Julian and spending a family day hiking then finishing it up with a piping hot slice at Julian Pie Company. I hadn't been in over a decade but decided to take my SO when he sent me an Instagram link and told me he'd never been. Now, as soon as I saw the Instagram reel, I knew it was not going to be the same experience that I remembered. That being said, it was still a great day! I highly recommend going on a weekday, Thursday or Friday to avoid crowds. We could not, so, we visited on a Saturday and I cannot stress enough that we had a good experience because we left EARLY! Try and arrive by 10 am or 11 am latest on a weekend. Because it was a Saturday, we went and had our pie first, which helped us avoid a line and having warm, flaky pie for brunch is the best. We tried the OG apple double crust with cinnamon ice cream and whipped cream, the berry crumb and the peach crumble. Do not sleep on that cinnamon ice cream!!! OMG, it's the best and so light and perfectly balanced. His favorite was the OG apple, I ended up liking ALL the flavors but really enjoying the berry crumble. I should have added vanilla ice cream to the peach, it needed something to cut the crumble. Overall, absolutely wonderful spot, near perfect pie and a...
Read moreWe drove out to Julien from San Diego for the reverred pie everyone associates with Julien. We ordered 5 different pies, some fresh and some frozen, and have had 4 of them so far (we have a frozen one left to go). Of the fresh we had bosenberry, dutch apple and pecan pies with icecream. The dutch apple was the better of the three, but to be honest the taste and quality was on par with what I used to have at school dinners. It was just bad. Not like a disgusting taste, but boring, bland, cheap. The butter is not good enough quality to make good pies there, and the pies are spiced as if someone is testing out making their own pies. We cooked and ate a frozen chicken pie too - same deal except after cooking the pie was running inside because of inappropriate prep I assume. Again, fine but reminded us of school lunch. Boring, plain, and definitely not special enough to buy for taste rather than hunger and absolutely not special enough to drive so far for. We were really disappointed as we felt like we wasted our entire day on the trip, but in the end it's our fault because we went on reviews to Julien. I'm writing this review because I wish there was a review to explain the reality of the pies at Julien. The sell for Julien is more architecture and...

I can totally see the hype! A very cute place on the outside and quick service as well. Really love the portion size of all the pies here and pretty much everything that was there on the menu.
There was a display of the items that they had available for the day and everything looked really appetizing. The cookies were really large and those cinnamon rolls were unbelievable! I saw someone who ordered the cinnamon rolls and it actually looked so soft and fluffy and delicious!
We got the all-natural apple pie to try a version without sugar added. And it was honestly a little tart for some reason. I thought they would have maybe put some monk fruit or others alternative sweeteners but maybe they're just avoided any sweetener. Or maybe the pie was meant to be tart, I'm not too sure about that.
Also tried the Dutch Apple Pie and this was phenomenal! That crumb topping on top really seals the deal! A properly nice sweet pie with a flaky crust and that perfect crunchy topping on top. Definitely recommend!
Sister-in-law also tried the hot chocolate and she finished it really quick so I'm guessing...
