Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream — Restaurant in San Diego

Hands down: BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK! You get a lot of ice cream for the amount they are charging. Be sure to check out the menu before hand, or if the line is long, take the time to read each flavor, because there is a lot to choose from. The menu is extensive to the point where you aren't sure, and before you know it you are next up at the window and don't know what to decide.

They have a 4 scoop sampler, which is the best bet when you are unsure. The only downside is that the flavors blend together because they are scooped into a plastic to-go container, not separated by anything. Make sure the flavors sound like they would taste good together, or you might get Mint Chocolate Chip mixed with Bubblegum (or something that doesn't go well). Overall great place, and great location at the lower level of Sky Deck in Del Mar. Park in the structure behind the shopping mall, they will have more parking slots available that trying to get one in the front of the shopping center. The line goes pretty fast. It would take multiple trips to try every flavor...

I've placed three different orders with Handel's Del Mar (delivered via DoorDash no problem) and two orders had big problems. The second order was missing the two Hurricanes. Big Ooops. Mistakes happen. DoorDash refunded for the two missing items. Then....the third order placed on 8/15 again had two Hurricanes (plus 8 pints). We placed all of it in the freezer and nibbled on the pints over the last 10 days. Last night, I opened the bag that contained my Hurricanes. Hurricanes are supposed to be Vanilla Ice Cream with Mixins (in this case the mixin was chocolate covered strawberry). My two Hurricanes were all Chocolate Ice Cream with no ability to tell what was mixed in!!!! Based on this experience, don't expect accuracy on orders that are delivered to you. You'll need to be in person and catch the mistake at the store. I called the manager today to inform the manager of the two in a row order problems and was told "no manager is in the store...

No outing to Del Mar is complete without a trip to Handel's! I really appreciate the family friendly atmosphere and the upbeat attitude of the employees. The ice cream is absolutely delicious and you also get a lot of it!

I would highly recommend the blue monster, banana cream pie and mint Oreo! I had tried basically every flavor here and there isn't a single one I wouldn't be down to have a whole scoop of. Some people don't know that Handel's serves more than just ice cream–they have milkshakes, chocolate covered bananas, lemonade, ice cream sandwiches and more! Personally, I love the four scoop sampler and the dipped waffle cones with sprinkles.

I've actually spoken to the manager and owners on separate occasions and they are really kind and in touch with their employees and community! Overall, such a big fan...
