Phattie's bake shop in Point Loma San Diego is Phat with a capital P!! The style, vibe and and ambiance of this place is off the chaaain!!!
Think plush, pink, bakery, sweets, treats and gleaming silver coffee-machines in fifties, whipped cream, icing and velvet display, all touched with golden glam accents!! This shop is high-concept with the sweets, coffee and trendy elegance to match!
While Phattie's is relatively new, having opened in April 2021, they're coming in hot! And sweet! Just like their delicious coffees :) .
I had their best-selling cranberry scone, along with an almond scone, carrot, chocolate and vanilla cupcakes, as well as a matcha and chai latte!!
The menu was inventive. Phattie's bakers and barristas know what's up. The vanilla cupcake was laced with almond flavor and something like poppy seed, but ground down so that the texture was seamless and light, like the cake itself. The chocolate cupcake was decadent, with a perfectly balanced vanilla icing and the cutest sprinkles topping in a gleaming gold foil tin!!
The scones were superb. The texture was a cross between a cookie and shortcake, with nut and dried fruit accents embedded like sugar-crown jewels.
The coffees are delicious. Phattie's baristas are artists, that effortlessly craft cuppas that are richly sweet and creamy, tempered with complex notes of quality coffee. My matcha latte, was magical, the perfect foil to my sweet treats, light and sweet and downright delicious!! My chai latte was on point, the chai flavor was rich and balanced so well in this creamy sweet latte.
I highly recommend Phattie's Bake Shop, for style, flair and substance and the cutest,...
Read moreWhen I saw the four plus star reviews I was hopeful. I ordered several things and I'm really sad to say it was across the board awful.
Ordered a cheddar jalapeno bagel that wasn't a bagel. If that thing was boiled before being baked, I will eat my hat. It's a pretty decent biscuit, but it is no bagel. No chew. It also left an odd aftertaste of too much baking soda. I believe they use King Arthur flour as it had a sort of brownish purplish tone.
I tried a sample of the maple log, and that had an aftertaste of artificial sweetener which it is labeled to contain, so that's fair. It was very dense and very sweet.
I tried a donut, which apparently used the same flour mix as the bagel. It was dense and sweet and yes it also had an aftertaste of soda and sort of a weird greasy mouth feel. I do not believe it was deep fried so it wasn't that. A ring-shaped pan does not a donut make!
I did not order a cookie, as they were big spread out flat things. I was taught that when you bake cookies you use cold ingredients to avoid spread. Apparently the baker missed that class.
The scone had so much baking soda in it that it burned. I drank water and it kept burning and then I started burping.
Whoever the baker is they are not knowledgeable of the science behind gluten free baking, or baking in general. I figured in a big city like San Diego I'd find some good gluten-free,...
Read moreDuring our recent trip to San Diego, we discovered Phatties Bake Shop, a delightful bakery that caters exceptionally well to gluten-free and vegan diets. For someone with gluten and dairy allergies, finding such a place was a dream come true.
The selection of baked goods was outstanding, each item crafted with care and bursting with flavor. The homemade bagels were a revelation—having never had homemade bagels before, I found them exquisite. My husband even remarked that you wouldn’t be able to tell they were gluten-free or vegan.
The warmth and generosity of the staff made our visits even more special. The baker was incredibly kind, gifting my daughter a baker’s smock and a complimentary apple juice for our trip home. This thoughtful gesture left a lasting impression on our family.
We were so impressed that we returned to Phatties Bake Shop before the end of our trip to indulge once more. For anyone seeking exceptional gluten-free and vegan baked goods, I highly recommend this gem. Their dedication to quality and customer satisfaction is evident...
