Excellent American comfort food diner. The food is tasty, the portions are fair, and the prices are reasonable. This is one of the few family owned restaurants that is not price gouging and cutting back on quality and portions to maximize profits. The atmosphere is as you would imagine from 50 years ago. Service is very fast and friendly, even during lunch time. Tried the Sunday turkey dinner special that includes soup, salad, and dessert. The chicken soup has lots of chicken and is very good. The blue cheese salad dressing is full of blue cheese chunks and seems homemade. The turkey was very tender and juicy, and the stuffing was surprisingly very tasty. The fried chicken breast meal was also very good, with a large tasty, juicy chicken breast with the perfect amount of batter to make it crispy even when drowned in gravy. The coconut cream pie was very good and not overly sweet. We will definitely be back to try the chicken pot pie. The peach pie and banana cream pie were very good, not overly sweet and packed with fruit. Update: Returned for Turkey dinner and Chicken Pot Pie meal specials. Got the Chocolate Cream Pie and the Coconut Cream Pie. Everything was excellent. Update: Got the Friday Meatloaf dinner special. We usually have low expectations for any restaurant's meatloaf, but this was excellent and not mostly filler. It tasted great. We also got the cherry pie. It had a perfect sweet and tart balance and an excellent crust. Everything is delicious here. Update: Got the Thursday Sirloin Tips dinner special. Very tasty. Tried the blueberry and pecan pies. Both were excellent and not too sweet. Another excellent dinner. Update: Got the St. Patrick's day dinner special and the pumpkin pie. Everything was very tasty. Update: Got the turkey dinner specials with cherry pie and coconut cream pie. Every was excellent. Our server, Virginia, is the best. She not only took our table's complicated orders without writing them down, but answered questions and made recommendations in between. We received everything 100% as ordered. She also checked several times to make sure everything was ok and asked if we needed anything. Update: Got the baby back ribs special. Fall off the bone tender and tasty! Update: Got the half chicken special and coconut cream pie. The skin on the chicken was perfectly crispy and the chicken was very tasty and juicy. Update: Got Sunday turkey dinner special and chocolate cream pie. Both excellent. Update: Got two Sirloin Tips Thursday specials. The meat was very tasty and tender. Got blueberry and cherry pies. Everything was excellent as usual. Update: Got the Corned Beef and Cabbage St. Patrick's Day special with a Cherry Pie dessert. Excellent! Update: Got the Mother's Day special Corned Beef and Cabbage with chocolate cream and cherry pies. Excellent! Update: Got the daily special Meatloaf dinners with chocolate cream and cherry pies. Excellent! Update: Got the daily special Roast Beef dinners, coconut cream and cherry pies. Excellent! Update: Got the Roast Beef daily special dinners. The beef was juicy and tender. Got Coconut Cream and Cherry pies. Everything was excellent! Update: Got a Turkey dinner, Fried Chicken dinner, Chocolate Cream pie, and a Strawberry pie. Everything excellent. Got a Turkey dinner, Fried Chicken dinner, Chocolate Cream pie, and a Cherry pie. All were excellent. Update: Got two Turkey dinners, Cherry pie and a Coconut Cream pie. Everything was excellent. Update: Got the corned beef special dinners with Chocolate Cream pie and a Peach pie to go. Everything was excellent! Update: Got the Easter special Turkey dinners with Chocolate cream pie and Fresh Strawberry pie. Everything was delicious except the strawberry pie. It had thinly sliced strawberries instead of whole and very few. It was mostly a red cornstarch gelatin hidden under a lot of whipped cream. Sadly it had an artificial aftertaste. Update: Got two Chicken Pie meals with Coconut Cream pie and Cherry pie. Everything...
Read moreHaven't been here in a couple of years, and I was happy to find it was just as enjoyable as the last time I was there. Went with a friend, so it was a party of two. When we walked in the door, the place looked very busy, and I was afraid we would have to wait to be seated. Got seated right away, and someone came right by to take our drink order. About a minute later, someone came by to take our order. We both had the Chicken Pot Pie dinner. The dinner is what they are known for. For 15 dollars, you get a pot pie (stuffed with chicken and gravy), whipped mashed potatoes drenched in gravy, cole slaw, vegetable, a roll, and a slice of pie for desert. The crust on the pot pie is lite and flaky. The desert pie was the same. The meal was really good and I will be going back. The service was great. Everyone had a smile on their face and were very efficient. The menu had expanded since I was last there. They now have sandwiches, hamburgers, fried chicken, etc. It's more of a full menu. They offer beer and wine for adults. Soda and shakes are available for the kids ( I am sure adults can order these, too). They do not stay open late and closed at 8 pm the Friday night we were there. There is ample parking behind the restaurant with limited street parking if the lot is full. After you are finished eating, stop by the takeout counter and pick up some frozen pot pies to take home. There are pre-baked and frozen or not baked and frozen pies that you can put in the freezer when you get home to enjoy later. The cooking instructions are printed on the top of the box. Or you can get ready to eat pies. In any case, be sure to pick up extra gravy and rolls. I picked up 12 pre-baked frozen pies to take with me to share with friends (buy 10, you get 2 free). A dozen rolls and gravy, and I am ready to have a dinner party. The restaurant is bright and inviting. The atmosphere is open and friendly. The restaurant has been serving San Diego for 85 years. After all these years, I still highly recommend this place for a tasty family style meal. Difinetly will not wait another two years...
Read moreI’ve been coming to the chicken pie shop since I was in diapers starting at the Hillcrest location in 1984. It is my go to comfort foods and I will continue coming here for the foreseeable future.
The food is simple. You’re not coming to a Michelin star restaurant when you come to the Chicken Pie Shop. You’re coming for something comforting, that will make your belly happy, and possibly remind you of your Grandma. It’s perfect food for when you’re sick, which is great because they have take out.
My go to meal is the chicken pie dinner. You can’t go wrong with it as it includes a chicken pie, potatoes with tasty gravy, the veggie of the day, coleslaw or apple sauce, AND a slice of pie for dessert. I usually swap out my coleslaw for double potatoes. Sometimes I add a cup of chicken soup or the split pea. Both are winners.
Service is speedy when you order the pie dinner. Usually just a couple of minutes turn around from order to delivery.
The have the GOOD ice too and the sodas are large for a sit down restaurant.
My tip: every day they have a different cream pie. Ask your server which pie it is when you’re ordering your meal. If you prefer the cream pie, order it right then, as they can often sell out by the time you’re ready to order dessert. Same applies to when they have strawberry pie in season.
The restaurant is kid friendly, lots of basic food items, and kind of noisy when full, so it covers the sound of your kids.
There’s parking right out front on the street on El Cajon Blvd with stair access to the front door. On the east side of the building, on Oregon street, there’s at least one handicap spot, with access to a ramp to the front door. There’s also regular street parking on Oregon and, just beyond the new apartment complex behind/to the south of the restaurant, there is a dedicated parking lot for Chicken Pie Shop customers.
They’ve just remodeled the exterior, so now there is more lighting, an updated look, and...
