I rarely do these. I dont like to do this to businesses and almost never give yelp reviews but after a 4th disappointing trip to Sunnies, I feel like it is my responsibility to be a counterbalance to the reviews that in my opinion, are grossly inflated.
Lets get down to the nitty gritty. I just spent 4 dollars on a iced latte that was the worst i've ever purchased. If you are going to advertise as a cafe (Sunnie's Ocean Beach and Coffee) and have a 2 thousand dollar espresso machine behind the counter, it makes sense that everyone in your staff should understand how to use it, and make all the drinks on the menu to at least a semi-proficient standard. I was given the latte in a paper soda cup, milk was not frothed, and the beans smelled and tasted as if it were brewed at a lonely gas station spot in the middle country.
The breakfast burrito was $10, undersized , and mainly consisted of potatoes that were undercooked. On a previous occasion, I have had their carne asada street tacos that were completely unseasoned (really just cheap flank steak at that this point) that was more fat than meat. The Mexican food is truly MEDIOCRE at best. There are so many outstanding short order Mexican food joints in and around Ocean Beach that are far superior to Sunnies.
To me, all of this could be forgiven, and certainly not made into a Yelp review, but what really tickles my grits about this place more than anything, is the unfriendliness. Its location (Sunset cliffs), its name (Sunnies) would suggest a business with workers with a genial demeanor. Quite the contrary, anytime I walk in there the person behind the counter seems to be stressed, curt, and generally unhappy.
This place gets 2 thumbs down. I recommend eating elsewhere in the...
Read moreMy partner and I live a few blocks away so we have become semi regulars at Sunnie's. We have really liked their food BUT a few weeks ago we got 2 burritos, got home, and excitedly unwrapped them. We took a few bites and discovered both of the burritos had fibers on them. Like fibers that come off clothing. You know that kind that occasionally get stuck in your eye? Yeah, like that, but all throughout the tortillas. They are hard to see, but once we noticed them we kept finding them. I am breastfeeding now so I didn't finish mine out of concern. I thought maybe it was a fluke thing and the fibers maybe came off a pot holder or something? We went again this evening and the same thing happened. These small, mysterious fibers were all on our tortillas. I called and explained the situation. The woman who answered sounded concerned and said she would ask the cooks. When she came back to talk to me she explained that they only have one tortilla warmer or grill and that maybe they were "burnt spots". I tried to explain again that these were like fibers from clothing...definitely not burnt spots. She said it's the first they've heard of this. Since they are probably fibers from some polyester material and I don't want to eat plastic we won't be going back. I'm pretty disappointed because I thought we had found our new Mexican food spot to frequent. I feel they should have offered to talk with a manager or something to figure out what's going...
Read moreI do not recommend. Not impressed at all. $9 for a super small, flavorless burrito with a bit of eggs, a bit of black beans, and very very little cold/not melted shredded cheese. It was so bland and boring… we added a ton of green sauce which made it a little better, but even that was quite watered down/low flavor compared to most green salsas at local Mexican spots here in SD. Also gotta add that the paper it was wrapped up in was also folded into the tortilla so had to unwrap the whole thing (black bean water leaking everywhere) to avoid eating the paper mixed in with the tortilla. Maybe foil would work better like Chipotle, or kitchen crew maybe just don’t wrap the paper mixed into the tortilla.
Size- tiny compared to others around town. (And it’s not cheaper)
Flavor- bland and boring.
If this burrito was about $3-4, it might be worth it, and it could be acceptable as a snack (but might have to add meat or something else for actual flavor).
Also…. tiny spot, no bathrooms which is always annoying — why would you pay the same (or more) as other places who have better food/flavor and more comfortable spaces for their guests— including the ability to pee!?! 😅
Positive— the cashier was nice and he also let me charge my phone for a couple minutes in the one outlet in the tiny...
