PARKING/LOCATION : If you are looking for this place for the first time, you can easily miss it unless you are using GPS. Parking is somewhat limited, depending on what time of day/week you go. The restaurant is located on a single strip of stores, so parking is directly in front of it.
DEMOGRAPHIC: Since this is located near SDSU, expect the majority of their customers to be students. May or may not be suitable for little children's ears to hear from the next table a bunch of frat boys talking it up where every other word is a swear word. Hasn't happened when I was there, but it COULD happen. ;) Also, because they do raise the music volume here, it may not be a good idea to bring little kids or even newborns. Oh, their poor little ears. Please keep them at home if you are wanting to try this place.
FOOD/PRICES: This is going to be the reason why I give it this many stars. Moderate range for the quality of sushi offered. Their specialty rolls are amazing. Try any of them. I particularly love the Vegas roll. It's a delicious combo to taste. I would come back to tolerate all of the negatives I have about this place JUST for the Vegas roll. It's become my "thing to get" when I'm craving something different, but for sushi. No matter what specialty roll you choose, their presentation is flawless. Absolutely perfect.
ATMOSPHERE: It took me a while to figure out why there were so many inflatable fish hanging off the ceiling, (duh). Bringing kids? Out on a first date? May or may not be a good idea. The music can be VERY loud at times, which is pretty good and festive if you're about getting ready to go party, clubbing, or getting drunk with sake at the bar area. Haha. The entire restaurant is pretty small, so you're lucky if you end up getting a booth. It can feel very awkward sitting at a table in the middle of the restaurant. Because there is limited seating, you almost feel rushed by the servers to finish your meal and get up to leave. "Don't even think about chatting it up after the main course... oh wait, you wanted dessert? Here. Don't forget I gave you your check before you finished your Vegas roll." Uh-huh.
As you exit from the restaurant and start heading to your car, you'll notice a faint muffling or even ringing in your ears as it tries to adjust to the sudden shift in volume from the restaurant's loud blast to the outdoor parking lot silence. Again, not the best environment suitable for little kids, or for newborns. Yeah. It can...
Read moreI used to frequent Tokyo sushi when it was on the other side of El Cajon. Felt like i couldn't get enough of it. I stopped for a couple of years and tried it again when they moved to their new location. I thought the sushi was even better then! Well it had been over a year and decided to grab some last week. Ordered the Tokyo dynamite roll, which is baked with scallops. It was horrible. One, it was cold but is supposed to be baked. Two, it was drenched in what looked lile watered down mayonaise. And three, it had veggies in top including onions. Not at all what i remembered and the flavor was nowhere near palatable for me. So i returned it and said that's not what I received in the past. The waiter assisting me was no help telling me i couldnt get a refund because I ordered it online, and could only get a credit for another meal. That made me very upset because NO where did it state on their website that I wouldn't be refunded. And that is just absolutely ridiculous! So he brought the manager over. The manager said I ordered the wrong roll, that I probably wanted the CA Beach roll, which is just the scallops baked on top. I told it didn't really specify on their website. So she had the CA Beach roll made for me instead, no extra charge. It looked right when she showed it to me. The restaurant was lowlit so was hard to tell. When I got it home, it realized it too had the same watered down mayo as the other roll did. It wasn't very baked and again, nothing like the roll I ordered in the past. Oh, and I ordered salmon Sake Nigiri that was warm and spotted brown.
I don't know what's going on at Tokyo but quality has gone way down to thr point that i will probably not order from there for at least another year. Another year in the hopes they get their act together. I used to really...
Read moreinfinite540 obviously hasn't eaten a lot of sushi as he said he did. On our table, we ordered fresh oysters, Japanese style just how i like it. We also ordered steamed gyoxa that tasted like store bought. They were decently sized, bigger than expected, but they were so bland. I got the crazy dragon roll that was decent in my taste and my wife got the las Vegas roll which had salsa and sweet chili sauce. Wife said it was 'alright' and had too much going on. I also ordered this scallop with mushroom appetizer and didn't expect it to be like Chinese stir fry surrounded in sauce. This one lady server that works there haven't really looked too accommodating since we were there. We saw that there was a college student discount and my wife happens to be one so we asked for that but she told us the payer needs to be the one with the discount. This is the first restaurant we encountered that have told us this which at the same time, why does it matter since she's with me and there's just two of us? Overall this restaurant is alright. The other staff members were accommodating besides that one lady. Food selection is great but could taste better. I want to come back here for their ramen but after our experience here, i dont know if i would. Restaurants with a 3-4 rating is definitely better than this one. The reviews have misled us to come here....
