Mediocre over priced food. Incredibly rude and unprofessional waiter. We were in on a Monday afternoon, walked in and quickly were able to pick one of multiple open tables to sit at. I am assuming the bar tender dropped menus at our table and walked away. It was probably another 15 minutes before we saw our waiter. He was taking numerous orders at once and was very rude when speaking to us. We watched him storm through the restaurant huffing and puffing, slamming things around and cussing under his breath and at the staff who were trying their best to help him. We were able to decipher from his pissed off ranting that he was the only server on at the time. It is understandable to be overwhelmed, but we watched him refuse help more than once. Unfortunately, being overwhelmed doesn't justify making the dining experience completely horrible for the guests who are there. When we finally were served our food it was very underwhelming. We never saw our server after he dropped the food at our table, we weren't asked if we needed anything or wanted anything else. We had to flag down the busser to get our check and boxes. We got a fried calamari, clam chowder , garlic fries, regular fries and 5 drinks which came out to almost $75. I would highly recommend finding any other place to spend your money if you value customer care...
Read moreThis place, in the heart of a tourist destination, provides surprisingly hearty and tasty food on a reasonable price. From the looks of this place, Chowder Hut screams "rip off". Probably greasy food, tasteless chowder, all living off of the ignorance of tourists. I had passed by this place on multiple occasions and never really entered.
Last weekend, my family was coming back from a walk in the pier, and we were all so tired and famished. We just walked into Chowder Hut because there were empty seats.
Place was decently clean, and the glass walls did a good job of blocking the winds. Upon walking up to order food, price seemed to be decent - yes, expensive on a global scale but reasonable for a tourist epicenter. The food comes out from the side with your number called, and boy were we in for a surprise.
Everything was freshly cooked, and accompanied with wonderful fries. Clam chowder was thick and appropriately creamy, the crab melt was delicious with "real" crab meat, chicken tenders were great for the kids, all with plentiful local beer. The amazing weather also added to the atmosphere.
Overall, we were full and happy and definitely enjoyed our experience. Perhaps it wouldn't have been this nice had the weather been naughty or the winds frigid but it was just perfect for a late lunch on a...
Read moreWhat a great place!! We ended our day at Fisherman’s Wharf with a delicious dinner at The Franciscan Crab Restaurant. Actually, we started out by going to the Chowder Hut. We sat down at a dirty table and waited forever to just order a drink. I asked where the restrooms were, and was told to go outside the restaurant and use the public bathrooms. I left the restaurant and walked around to the back. I opened the door to the public bathrooms and was so overwhelmed by the stench of old stale urine, dirty toilet paper all over, dirty floors and sinks, I couldn’t stomach going inside. I walked back to our table, we paid for our drinks and left. That was the best decision we ever made. We walked down the street and found The Franciscan Crab Restaurant. What a great place. It was fun to look at all the old movie star pictures on the walls, we started with two dirty martinis, then ordered the Mussels, Crispy Crab Cakes, Caesar Salad, Calamari, and ended it with Grandma’s Lemon Scented Custard Torta – which were all excellent!! What a wonderful dinner. We will be coming back here! It’s a bit pricey, but well worth it. We highly recommend this place for their great food, excellent service and beautiful bay views. Thank you for making the last meal in San Francisco...
